The PhD training programme and regular supervision contacts have provided the direction and support necessary to ensure that I deliver a quality thesis in a timely manner.I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience of working at Ulster University and feel it has put me in a better position to sustain a full time career as an artist and academic in the years to come.William Crowe -
Throughout my PhD I’ve been provided with continuous support and guidance by my supervisors and the staff at the University.I’ve also received many opportunities to further enhance my professional development in the form of teaching experience and presenting my work at conferences which will aid in my pursuit of a career in academia or industry.Connel Bottom - PhD Graduate
Looking back over the course of my career, I can categorically state that my PhD from Ulster has opened many doors in terms of career/professional development and commercial success through winning consulting commissions. The skills I gained were specific (in my subject area), but often when I reflect, it is the general skills that have added most value to my career over time – for example, the ability to see the bigger economic picture, the ability to analyse and summarise complex sets of data, the ability to write reports and present in a succinct manner and the ability to influence stakeholders in projects. For these reasons I highly recommend a PhD as a foundation for career success.Brenna O'Roarty -
For me, completing a PhD at Ulster University was transformative.A PhD trains you to think differently. It acted as a springboard to my career path, greatly developing both my analytical and personal skills. The quality and dedication of my supervision remains unrivalled. My experience opened the door to amazing opportunities.Bernadette Best -
I can honestly say that doing a PhD at Ulster University has been a thoroughly rewarding and enjoyable learning experience.I’ve learned so much about myself whilst developing my skills as a researcher and it’s opened up so many other additional opportunities and new networks. As a practitioner for many years it’s refreshing to have an opportunity to get involved in a piece of work which offers the potential to make a contribution to both theory and practice. It’s a lot of hard work but so worth the rewards. I’d recommend it to anyone prepared to commit to it.Luz Ayda Gomez Duran - MSc Peace and Conflict Studies, Colombia(Student)

Destination USA (Western Connecticut State University)When I first arrived I was really impressed, the people were so accommodating and made sure I was at ease from arrival on campus, there was loads to do and so many activities were planned which is where I met friends that I grew a close bond with. I had the opportunity to travel while here and I met many people from different cultures which i enjoyed. An experience that has not only helped me personally but academically and professionally. I have seen a massive influx in my academic work and I also got a job with a media institute who seen my videos I took when i was away. It is a must to explore another country!!Nathan McGuigan - Media
Destination ChinaWe went to China, visiting four different regions in two weeks - Wuhan, Huangshi, Yichang and Beijing. This experience has lit a fire under me, it has made me want to go out and travel more, experiencing and seeing more cultures. Being a media student with a passion for photography and travel this was a fantastic experience! I would encourage others to consider a mobility programme, try and utilize any experience that the University has here. There isn't going to be many more of these opportunities outside of the University. You are here for a short time make the most out of this while you can.Lydia Nelson - Graphic Design & Illustration
Destination West Virginia, USAMy College was West Virginia, Davis College. The campus in itself was beautiful, on a valley surrounded by hills. It was very different to Ulster University in Belfast, everyone lived on campus. There were people from all over the world, it felt more like a summer camp than an actual University. I really enjoyed my overall experience, there was so much happening and I was kept very active, I got to know people quickly and I found that everyone was in a similar situation to myself. I would encourage others to grasp these opportunities with both hands.Nicola Anderson - English with Education
Destination USA (Kings University)The campus was so small, it honestly felt more like a community, the dormant was right in the middle of the campus which made it much easier to find everything and get chatting to others. There were so many clubs and societies and my roommate was fantastic! she was exactly in the same boat as me, we made a pact that we would go to all events together and we made such a good friend group because of this! Overall my experience was great and i would definitely encourage as many students as possible to take part in different programmes that the University are offering, it really is an experience of a lifetime.Amanda Mironova-Strong - English Literature

There have been a number of benefits including providing up-to-date knowledge of theory and best practice.Stephanie Gowdy - NI Student Recruitment Lead, PwC -
PwC recruited nearly 50 placement students this year and this has increased dramatically over the years. The reason for the increase is a result of the quality of the students we are seeing and other parts of the business recognising what a valuable resource the students are... The students bring skills and enthusiasm on a par with the graduates we recruit.Lorraine Rodgers - HR & Business Support Manager, Doherty Pension & Investment Consultancy -
After seeing Colleen's quality improvement project, we offered Colleen a new role within the Company as Service Delivery Co-ordinator. Through the skills that she had learnt from her Psychology Degree, she adapted these and put them into play...
