About

Project management is the application of processes, methods, knowledge, skills and experience to achieve the project objectives. Projects fall outside of routine, day to day, or "business as usual" tasks.

Project Management results in change, in response to shifts in the in the workplace and environment.

Organisations undertake many projects with differing levels of complexity. Good project management ensures that the goals of projects closely align with the strategic goals of the business or the client's objectives.

This course looks to outline a linear project management framework that will emphasise dividing projects into manageable and controllable stages.

The role of the project manager is changing in the digital world, this course will equip project managers with the skills they need to develop in the project economy.

  • Project Management Overview: An introduction to projects, lifecycle and project initiation.
  • Project Initiation: The principles and practices of creating a project scope. Introduction to project scope, project scope statement, critical project success factors and budgets.
  • Project Planning: Planning with a focus on deliverables, project schedule, critical path and resource planning.
  • Project Execution: Introduction to project execution, issue management, planning, quality management, risk management and creating a communication plan.
  • Project Monitoring and Control: Introduction to project monitoring and control, change control, project environment and cost control.
  • Project Close: Project close documentation, financial closure, issue management closure, risk management closure, lessons learned and post-project review.

Career Opportunities

Students will be able to use the knowledge on this course to manage projects more effectively and efficiently in their organisation, whilst upskilling their own project management skills.

The skills learned on this course are transferrable to a number of organisations, sectors and roles.

Students may wish to study other Master's level courses which could lead to a Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma or Master's degree.

The course will start in Semester 2, 2026. This course will be delivered over 7 weeks.

Teaching, Learning and Assessment

The course will be taught online through a blend of live lectures and self-directed learning.

The course is 100% coursework. Assessment will take the form of two online tests which take place in week 4 and 7 of the course.

This is a 15 credit module short course.

Course Entry requirements

You should hold a Second-Class Honours Degree or better OR have significant managerial / business experience.


Fee Funding Eligibility

Places are limited and open to applicants who:

  1. are over 18 years of age;
  2. are eligible to work in Northern Ireland;
  3. are ‘settled’ in Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland (ROI)*, and has been ordinarily resident  for at least three years;
  4. meet the Ulster University general entry requirements (opens in new window)

* For anyone resident in ROI, you need to be a UK or Irish citizen to be able to apply for this course.

Please note that this programme is not available to applicants with the following residency statuses:

  1. GB and Islands
  2. EU excluding ROI qualifying residents
  3. International students

Terms and Conditions

  1. Fee funding is paid directly by the Department for the Economy to Ulster University.
  2. Students cannot redeem the funding for an alternative programme nor redeem the cash value.
  3. Students cannot redeem this funding in conjunction with any other course fee funding.
  4. Students can normally only enrol on one programme at Ulster in any one academic year. There may be exceptions if the total credits from more than one programme do no exceed 60 credits.
