About
This module has been developed in response to employer feedback and requests for a short course to support women who wish to return to the workplace following a period of absence or upskill in order to undertake a more transformative role within the workplace.
The module will introduce self-reflection on the contributions the participants came make to aspects of business, management and leadership which will help them to gain a better appreciation of their role within the organisation and make them a more effective manager.
As such the module will cover a number of areas fundamental to the understanding the role of females in business and management.
The content is broken down into the following days:
- Day 1 – Leading Self and Others: Applying design thinking principles workshop 1 will help students to gain an appreciation of the skills they possess that are necessary to a thriving, developing and ever-changing workforce. Personal knowledge management and emotional intelligence will be key to the leadership journey of each participant. Workshop 2 will focus on leading and managing people, this session will introduce different organisation types and how individuals, teams, managers and leaders operate within such organisational structures.
- Day 2 - Innovation & Entrepreneurship: Organisations must look to evolve and innovate to stay current and be successful. This day will focus on how organisations create a culture of innovation and individual entrepreneurial behaviours that can be encouraged and harnessed in this process.
- Day 3 - Communication and Presentation Workshops: This will encourage students to develop their communication and presentation skills. A substantial component of the module is concerned with examining interpersonal interaction, with a focus on providing students with the skills to interpret their own behaviour (and response of others) as contributors to workplace culture and values.

On completion of this module, participants will have a broad understanding of their personal leadership and management skills, which will empower them to take the next step in their career.
Course Duration and Delivery Format
The course will be taught on the Derry-Londonderry Campus and will be taught over 3 days, divided across a three month time frame, with additional online content to support learning.

Teaching, Learning and Assessment
A range of mediums will be utilised to inform and embed learning; such as, facilitative learning, lectures, tutorials, guest lectures, workshops, simulations, directed learning, online learning resources and case studies.
Knowledge and understanding of the subject is disseminated through methods which reflect the distinctive nature of a mini MBA module. Therefore, applied learning utilising live, in-company examples and students' own work experience will feature in many of the learning situations.
In addition, the learning and teaching methods used to develop professional/practical skills place emphasis on group work and experiential learning. The development of these skills will include understanding and recognising individual learning styles, and individual contributions in group processes. Verbal and written feedback is provided to identify and confirm good practice.
Soft skills, such as communication, are embedded throughout the fabric of the module. In particular, they are established and developed through the completion of reflective exercises, practical and applied exercises, work-based assignments, case studies and peer presentations. The course is 100% coursework.

This is a 15 credit module short course.
Course Entry requirements
You should hold a Second-Class Honours Degree or better OR have significant managerial / business experience.
Fee Funding Eligibility
Places are limited and open to applicants who:
- are over 18 years of age;
- are eligible to work in Northern Ireland;
- are ‘settled’ in Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland (ROI)*, and has been ordinarily resident for at least three years;
- meet the Ulster University general entry requirements (opens in new window)
* For anyone resident in ROI, you need to be a UK or Irish citizen to be able to apply for this course.
Please note that this programme is not available to applicants with the following residency statuses:
- GB and Islands
- EU excluding ROI qualifying residents
- International students
Terms and Conditions
- Fee funding is paid directly by the Department for the Economy to Ulster University.
- Students cannot redeem the funding for an alternative programme nor redeem the cash value.
- Students cannot redeem this funding in conjunction with any other course fee funding.
- Students can normally only enrol on one programme at Ulster in any one academic year. There may be exceptions if the total credits from more than one programme do no exceed 60 credits.

This degree is open to students with a UG second class honours degree in any subject.
