I studied International Tourism Management at Ulster University. My journey into higher education started after I left school following my GCSEs. I had always been interested in travel and tourism, so I pursued a Level 3 course at NRC, which led me to Belfast Metropolitan College where I completed a foundation degree graduating with a Distinction. That course was accredited by Ulster University, and I really enjoyed the experience which made my decision to progress to Ulster University for my final year an easy one.

My experience

One of the highlights of my course was the eBusiness module, where my group worked alongside Portstewart Golf Club to create a tailored marketing strategy. It was a fantastic hands-on project that gave us real insight into the kind of work we could be doing after graduation. I particularly enjoyed working directly with an external organisation as it gave me a taste of real-world marketing and how tourism and business intertwine.

My most memorable experience during my time at Ulster was taking part in the summer bridging programme, which helped students move from the foundation degree into final year. It was a brilliant opportunity to meet others in the same position, and it made the transition much smoother. We started in September already knowing familiar faces which made a huge difference.

Professional and personal development

Alongside my final year studies, I worked part-time as the Event Assistant for the North West 200 motorcycle event. This role provided me with invaluable industry experience and allowed me to apply classroom learning to a fast-paced, real-life environment. Balancing both the event and my studies was challenging at times but incredibly rewarding and helped me grow both personally and professionally.

In 2024, I was incredibly proud to be awarded the NI Travel News Travel and Tourism Student of the Year, and to be named a finalist for the Institute of Hospitality Award for Student Management Potential. These awards reflected the hard work and commitment I put into my foundation degree, and it was a real honour to have that recognised as I prepared to move into my final year.

The course at Ulster has had a huge impact on me. Personally, I’ve grown in confidence, particularly when it comes to networking and communicating with professionals. Professionally, I’ve gained practical skills that I’ve already been able to put into use during my placements and part-time work.

Future plans

This summer, I’ve taken on an exciting role working at Formula 1 events across Europe, delivering catering services to team truck drivers. It’s given me the opportunity to network, travel and experience the motorsport world first-hand which is an industry I’m passionate about and hope to continue in.

After graduation, I plan to continue working with the North West 200 and build on the experience I’ve already gained. My goal is to carve out a career in the motorsport and events industry, combining my love of travel, organisation, and fast-paced environments.

Ulster University has been a huge part of my journey providing the foundation, support, and opportunities to help me grow into who I am today.
