Inaugural Professorial Lecture by Brian Murphy, Professor of Digital and Distributed Learning and Director of Widening Access and Participation

University education has transformed from an elite to a mass system in which admission relies on migration to attend university and on competitive selection for admission by educational attainment. These present acute equity issues for NI: it is the only UK region that cannot contain its demand, where compounded disadvantage eats into educational attainment, and where academic selection in schooling and by universities stratifies admissions and participation in tertiary education. Professor Brian Murphy will explore the moral maze of fair access and social mobility for young people coming of age in NI today, and ask the question – If it’s too difficult to deliver a comprehensive schooling system, should we instead consider a comprehensive university system?
