This special exhibition takes an iconic work from the Ulster Museum’s collection, and gives it pride of place in the heart of the city and as a gift to its citizens for the Christmas period.

This year, art Unwrapped will present “St. Matthew and the Angel” by Jan van Bijlert, (1597/8-1671), a much-loved piece and one of his most famous paintings.

Art Unwrapped Online

Like many events this year, Art Unwrapped is a little different due to the restrictions of Covid-19.

In this, its third year, the exhibition is moving online.

Visitors can still enjoy the artistic gift to the city and have a guided introduction to the work delivered by students from Ulster University School of Art.

In fact, this year there will be the opportunity for visitors to the online exhibition to choose a number of different tours from and thereby experience different explorations of this magnificent art piece.

Schools’ visits and workshops

In addition, the schools’ visits and workshops are moving online. Teachers and Pupils can take the online tours and also choose from the range of narrated, interactive workshops below. All delivered by the Ulster University School of Art students.

Activities associated with the exhibition will also move online.

There will be regular updates from the fine art students completing a copy of the painting through the exhibition period and Poet Padraig Regan will be creating a poetic piece inspired by the painting.
