I am prepared to start thinking about & working on my career

Starting your employability journey

If you are motivated to starting thinking about and working on your career it means you have the motivation to identify and develop the skills and qualities you need to be successful in your career and life. But the question is, where do you start:

1) Adopt a curious mindset

Everyone wants to be successful and a fundamental part of developing the skills you need is to adopt a curious mindset. If you are motivated to know more about jobs, employers, developmental activities, work experience opportunities and networks then you are much more likely to take advantage of this information and that will lead to the development of key employability skills.

2) Be prepared to experience more

Employers want applicants who have the skills they need and skills are developed through experiences. During your time at Ulster University you can get involved in lots of extra-curricular activities including skills development programmes, volunteering, work experience and more through the UIster EDGE Award.

3) Seek expert advice

Our Employability Advisor team are ready to provide you with the expert advice you need to get started. Don't worry if you aren't sure what you want as it's our job to help you figure that out. We advise on all aspects of your employability whether it be work experience, job search, CVs and interviews, your digital presence and helping you develop personal career goals.

4) Develop your self awareness

Arguably the most important skill you have is your self awareness and everyone can take action to develop and improve their level of self awareness. You can become more self aware by thinking about your experiences and achievements in a different light. Think about the things you have done and start reflecting on what skills you need to achieve what you have achieved to date from your part time job, academic achievements, volunteering, sport or something else. Start by completing some of our online self assessments.
