School of Communication and Media Student Adviser

Students from the School of Communication and Media often play an informal advice giving and mentoring role via participation in open events and induction sessions.


Outline of Activity

The activity records and acknowledges students’ work in this area, and formalises it into a sustained period of advice giving and mentoring between specific students and specific advisees, thus improving its efficacy.

When initially assigned advisees:

  • To send an initial email to each of the advisees, introducing her/himself, commenting on her/his experience of the course so far, and advising on practical aspects such as commuting to uni / moving out of home.
  • To invite each advisee send queries if they wish, and respond to these in good time.
  • If practical and if the advisee would like to do so, to have one face to face meeting in a public setting (e.g. a coffee shop). Where advisees subsequently gain a place on their chosen course:
  • To meet with advisees during a set induction session.
  • To offer to answer a list of queries advisees might have during the first few weeks of semester.

Assessment Details

Students will be expected to provide a log of student adviser activities planned and completed, and a final report of 400-500 words which reflects on the effectiveness of the role and their own personal and professional development in carrying it out. The log and report will be sent for verification to the coordinator of the Student Adviser scheme.

Level of Commitment

20 hours.
