Building Your Future (Construction Engineering & Management)

This activity is open to Construction Engineering & Management students and is achieved through completing twenty hours of engagement with your course team initiatives and meetings with your academic mentor.


Outline of Activity

This activity includes a combination of attending academic mentor meetings, guest lectures, site visits organised locally or in the wider construction community.

Learning Outcomes

By completing the Building Your Future activity you will:

  • Increase your knowledge and understanding of the importance of personal development at university;
  • Raise your awareness and knowledge of on-site construction activities;
  • Improve your health and safety awareness and apply your knowledge to a live site environment;
  • Understand the principles of risk control recognising risk

Assessment Details

Students will be required to complete the following activities and provide evidence of this in the form of a portfolio:

  • Reflections of Welcome Week (250 word essay)
  • Attendance at 2 academic mentor meetings (record of meetings to be included in portfolio)
  • Participation & reflection in CITB NI Induction Day (250 word essay)
  • Participation in 2 site visits to high quality residential development (250 words reflecting on the site visit and stages of the house building production process)
  • Construction Skills Register (CSR) One Day Health and Safety Training 
    Course and Occupational Assessment for Operatives

Level of Commitment

  • Reflections of Welcome Week (250 word essay) – 3 hours
  • Participation & reflection in academic mentor meetings (minutes of meeting 200 words) - 1 hour
  • Participation & reflection in CITB NI Induction Day - 6 hours
  • Participation in 2 site visits to high quality residential development - 4 hours
  • Construction Skills Register (CSR) One Day Health and Safety Training 6 hours
