Podiatry at Ulster - the sole provider of injectible cortisone therapy training in an undergraduate programme across the UK and Ireland.

Ulster University offers this course to people who wish to gain a professional qualification in Podiatry together with a good foundation for postgraduate study and continuing professional development. The BSc Hons Podiatry course is a full-time, three year programme of study. Graduates of the course obtain the academic award of a BSc (Hons) degree, eligibility to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), and eligibility to apply for membership to the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists (SCP), which allows them to practise as podiatrists in the UK Health and Social Services and also in private practice.

Podiatry is a science based healthcare profession that places emphasis on the promotion, maintenance, and restoration of foot health. The responsibilities of the professional podiatrist are to detect and diagnose problems concerning the feet, and to implement an effective management strategy. Students are trained to appreciate all aspects of health and disease and to work alongside other healthcare professionals to provide the most appropriate care for their patients. Extensive practical experience equips graduates with the knowledge and skills essential for clinical practice.

The Podiatry programme is delivered within an environment where students are regarded as adult learners, potential employees and developing practitioners. A supportive and encouraging environment facilitates students in meeting the challenges of the course with confidence and security. Within both the academic and practice placement modules, students are viewed as potential future colleagues with a culture of multi-professional respect emphasised early on that is interwoven throughout the programme.

Podiatry is a profession of subspecialties: sports medicine, paediatrics, rheumatology, musculo-skeletal, diabetes, general practice, dermatology, medico legal and podiatric surgery all offer potential avenues for employment and extended scope of practice. This degree programme seeks to increase student awareness of these roles and the broad base of training prepares graduates for entry level into any of these sub specialties of Podiatry.

In addition, Ulster University is the first programme across the UK and Ireland that embeds injectible cortisone therapy into the undergraduate curriculum.

Podiatric Foundation Studies

Year: 1

This module provides a foundation in Podiatric soft tissue pathology and therapeutics. The module details structure and function of the human skin and its appendages and the knowledge underpinning the clinical use and application of chemical and physical therapies.

Anatomy and Physiology for Podiatrists

Year: 1

Foundations of Clinical Practice

Year: 1

This module provides students with an introduction to the clinical environment, infection control and basic Podiatry skills. Students explore the application of theory to practice in the fields of chemical and simple mechanical therapies. This module provides student with orientation to the health and social care trust environment.

Introductory Biomechanics

Year: 1

This module will provide students with a basic knowledge and understanding of the theoretical principles and practical application of biomechanics. Theory gained in this module is essential for study of

Pathomechanics in Year Two. The theory of this subject is further extended across all clinical practice and practice placement modules

Lower Limb Structure and Function

Year: 1

This module will provide students with a comprehensive knowledge of the functional anatomy of the lower limb. Theory gained in this module is essential for study of patient assessment and biomechanics in second year. The theory of anatomy is extended into clinical practice throughout all practice-based modules.

Clinical Practice Development

Year: 1

This module provides students with an understanding of clinical recognition of various soft tissue pathological states affecting the foot as well as an introduction to clinical skills to enable complete assessment and treatment of patients. Throughout clinics students will be able to integrate podiatric theory into clinical practice.

Knowledge and Skills for Personal & Professional Development 1

Year: 1

This module provides opportunities to learn in an interprofessional context. Students will acquire skills for both academic and practice based learning. It will provide them with an opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills on issues relating to professional practice and personal development within a supportive environment.

Knowledge and Skills for Personal & Professional Development 2

Year: 1

This inter-professional module introduces students to the key concepts in health communication and health psychology that are necessary for effective practice as a health professional. The module is delivered primarily through online activities which students complete independently and using group work.

Year two


Year: 2

This module will examine the nature and presentation of disease within the various organ systems and explore the mechanisms that produce disease and how the presentation of pathology relates to cellular dysfunction and altered physiological responses.

Research Methods

Year: 2

The module provides a foundation of knowledge and skills for using research evidence to inform practice and for designing and conducting research and clinical audit post-registration. The focus is on research design and qualitative and quantitative methods appropriate for healthcare research. A series of lectures and workshops provide theoretical knowledge and practical experience of research activities including data analysis.

Pharmacotherapeutics in Prescribing

Year: 2

This module will enable the student to develop the knowledge into understanding drug action, pharmacology and clinical use of drugs in disease management and those specifically on the approved list of medicines for use by Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered podiatrists. The student will gain knowledge required to safely and competently access, supply and administer further medicines that may be added to the approved list.

Clinical Practice and Patient Assessment

Year: 2

This module will reinforce the importance of good history taking and the selection of appropriate patient assessments. Teaching will focus on current approaches to interpretation of clinical signs and symptoms for diagnosis. The role of the multidisciplinary healthcare team for the holistic approach to patient management is also considered.

Practice Placement 1

Year: 2

This module will enable students to integrate the theoretical knowledge of a range of clinical podiatric assessment procedures, including interpretation and diagnostic implications, into practice within the health and social care environment. This module will reinforce the importance of good history taking and physical examination in patient assessment and focus on current and relevant podiatric techniques.


Year: 2

This module will extend the students knowledge of biomechanics to more complex clinical situations requiring a detailed understanding of pathological biomechanical processes. This will involve a problem solving approach utilising orthoses and rehabilitation techniques and the use of physical therapies as applied to those with compound foot problems and special groups of service users.


Year: 2

This module uses problem solving skills to the inquiry of systemic disease and pathology as well as the medical, pharmacological and surgical management of the conditions studied. The module enables students to consolidate their holistic approach to patient management by relating clinical findings to underlying pathological processes.

Local Anaesthesia and Corticosteroid Injection Therapy in Clinical Practice

Year: 2

This module will enable students to recognise conditions that are appropriately treated with local anaesthetic and injectable corticosteroids. Teaching will focus on the safe and effective administration of these and their integration within the podiatric treatment plan. In conjunction with these specialist areas of practice, students will further develop their psychomotor skills for patient treatments.

Practice Placement 2

Year: 2

Practice based learning is essential for the education of a competent practitioner and this module provides the students with four weeks of professional practice placement experience in the health and social care setting to further integrate and consolidate theory into practice. Focus is placed upon students? participation in the delivery of a podiatry service under supervision of practice educators.

Year three

Research Project

Year: 3

In this module students will develop research skills by undertaking a research study on a topic related to practice. Each student, supported by a supervisor, will have an opportunity to undertake one of the following types of research project (i) a systematic critical review to inform practice; (ii) a research protocol involving the design of a research study to produce evidence to inform practice or (iii) research report involving the collection and/or analysis of data to produce evidence to inform practice. Lectures, supplemented by online material, will provide the theoretical knowledge and guidance required to undertake the research task. Workshops will provide support for practical skills such as systematic searching for literature, using critical appraisal tools and data management and analysis.

The High Risk Foot

Year: 3

This module is designed to explore the relationship between systemic disease and high risk status of the lower limb. Critical evaluation of treatment techniques, clinical reasoning and podiatric risk management across a range of client/patient groups will prepare the student for autonomous and multi-disciplinary podiatric practice.

Practice Placement 3

Year: 3

This module seeks to integrate theory and clinical practice, applying diagnostic and therapeutic techniques to pathways of care for service users. The student will manage caseloads whilst developing clinical autonomy in accordance with their progress. Students will also gain experience of specialist health and social care services and the private practice environments.

Advancing Clinical Practice

Year: 3

This module will provide an extension of clinical skills already gained, but with the focus being on the more specialised groups of service users encountered in professional podiatric practice. It will also heighten students? awareness of the multi- interdisciplinary approach for overall holistic management of service users encountered during placement.

Surgery and Diagnostic Imaging

Year: 3

This module uses problem solving skills applied to the role of surgical intervention in the management of foot and ankle pathologies. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the principles and practice of surgery. The module uses diagnostic imaging techniques in the diagnosis of common foot pathology, neoplastic change and infection. The various laboratory and blood tests utilised to monitor the patient?s general medical status and organ function, bone and tissue sampling, microbiological sampling will also be taught and students will be expected to demonstrate and apply a working knowledge in these areas.

Professional Development and Employability: POD

Year: 3

This module explores the health and social care policies relevant to the delivery and organisation of podiatry and other services. The emphasis is on equipping the student with the knowledge and skills to make a successful transition into the workplace.

Prescription Only Medicines

Year: 3

This module will introduce the legislative framework and professional/ethical principles underpinning prescribing practice. The student will assimilate knowledge and understanding in Pharmacotherapeutics with legislative requirements, leading to safe and competent access, supply and administration of medicines available on the approved list of medicines for Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered podiatrists.

The A Level requirement for this course is BBB to include a grade B from one of the following: Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Double Award Applied Science (grade BB).


Overall BTEC award profile DDM (to include a unit grade profile of 9 distinctions) in a relevant science based BTEC.

Irish Leaving Certificate

Overall Irish Leaving Certificate profile B2,B2,B2,B2,B2 at Higher level. Specific subjects required include two B2 Highers in the following: Maths, Physics, Biology or Chemistry. Plus English and Mathematics Grade D at Higher level or Grade C at Ordinary level.

Access to Higher Education (HE)

Overall Access profile pass with an average of 70%, including 70% in each level 3 module to include two level 3 modules from the following: Maths, Biology, Physics or Chemistry, NICATS maths (25 credits) or maths 1 & 2 or GCSE grade C Maths.

GCSE Profile to include English Language and Mathematics at grade C.

Essential/Key Skills in Application of Number is not regarded as an acceptable alternative to GCSE Mathematics.

English Language Requirements

English language requirements for international applicants
The minimum requirement for this course is Academic IELTS 7.0 with no band score less than 6.5.

Ulster recognises a number of other English language tests and comparable IELTS equivalent scores.

Additional Entry Requirements

Satisfactory performance in the HPAT-Ulster selection test is also required. More information on the Health Professions Admissions Test (HPAT-Ulster) can be found at Please note that there is a cost to undertake the test.

Applicants should note that, as they will be engaged in 'regulated activity' involving children or vulnerable adults as part of their course, there is a compulsory, legal requirement to obtain an Enhanced Disclosure from AccessNI. You will also be required to demonstrate good health prior to commencing the course. You will therefore complete a health declaration form which will be screened by Occupational Health who will confirm your medical fitness to undertake the course. Following the screening, you may be required to undertake a vaccination programme. You will be liable for the cost of both the health screening and vaccinations. Costs will be confirmed.

HND (science related) entry requirement:

Pass HND with overall Merit to include 60 distinctions in level 5 credits/units.

HNC (science related) entry requirement:

Pass HNC with overall Distinction to include 90 distinctions in level 4/5 credits/units.

Career options

Podiatry offers a rewarding career for those looking for a caring profession with flexibility of working, coupled with a challenging scope of practice and range of patients. Working as a podiatrist can be exciting and rewarding because it involves working in a variety of environments with a number of other health care professionals and many different groups of patients who have a wide range of podiatric problems. Over time, Podiatrists may find areas of clinical practice they want to focus on for their future career development and may undertake further training across a number of areas eg high risk foot management, biomechanics, podopaediatrics, surgery etc. There are employment opportunities for Podiatry graduates within both the National Health Service and private practice, where the locations you work in will depend on the scope of your practice. This could include: hospitals, community clinics, patients' homes, private clinics, sports clubs or fitness centres.

Companies in industry and retail often employ podiatrists as part of the occupational health team. Opportunities also exist within the Education sector. There are opportunities for full and part time postgraduate study. Opportunities exist throughout the UK, Ireland and other parts of the world. Graduates seeking employment outside of the UK may have to meet specific requirements for professional recognition/registration in other countries and may require some experience within the UK first.

Health and Care Professions Council, the (HCPC)

Approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) for the purpose of providing eligibility to apply for registration with the HCPC as a chiropodist/podiatrist.

College of Podiatry, the

Graduates of accredited programmes in Podiatry or Podiatric Medicine are deemed to be fit for the profession of podiatry. They may join the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists and, upon acceptance, will have the right to use the post-nominal letters: MChS.

Additional costs include - AccessNI Check, Health Screening, Membership of Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists, Placement Expenses, Uniforms.


As part of entry to your course, you will be required to purchase a uniform during the first week of the semester. 2015-16 costs were approx. £100.

Membership of Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists

You will be required to join the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists. The cost of student membership will be approximately £125 for the three years.

Placement Expenses

Students may incur expenses during periods of placement. Some placements may be outside Northern Ireland and will incur additional costs.

Tuition fees and costs associated with accommodation, travel and normal living are a part of university life. 

Where a course has additional mandatory expenses we make every effort to highlight them in the online prospectus. These may include residential visits, field trips, materials (e.g. art, design, engineering) inoculations, security checks, computer equipment, uniforms, professional memberships etc.

We aim to provide students with the learning materials needed to support their studies. Our libraries are a valuable resource with an extensive collection of books and journals as well as first-class facilities and IT equipment. Computer suites and free wifi is also available on each of the campuses.

There will be some additional costs to being a student which cannot be itemised and these will be different for each student. You may choose to purchase your own textbooks and course materials or prefer your own computer and software. Printing and binding may also be required. There are additional fees for graduation ceremonies, examination resits and library fines. Additional costs vary from course to course. 

Students choosing a period of paid work placement or study abroad as part of their course should be aware that there may be additional travel and living costs as well as tuition fees.
