Summary

Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) is recognised as an important management strategy in respiratory failure. Practitioners, as members of the multidisciplinary team, could set up and implement an NIV service in primary and secondary care. This module will equip the post graduate student with diagnostic, clinical and critical thinking skills in order to facilitate the NIV care pathway.

About

A significant number of patients require management of respiratory failure. There is a need to create an environment where interdisciplinary patient focussed care can be achieved through skilled clinicians. The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines, 2010, and British Thoracic Society (BTS) Guidelines, 2011, for patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) have recommended that management of patients in acute respiratory failure use NIV. It is an aspiration that NIV is available in all hospitals in the UK who admit patients with COPD. In addition there are 1,000 people in NI with muscle disease with no designated funding for home ventilation services within the NHS (Mc Collum Report 2012). The Service Framework for Respiratory Health and Well Being for NI, 2013, also identify the need for specialist expertise within the respiratory teams to deliver NIV in children and adult populations in primary care and in the community. This is multidisciplinary opportunity and needs to be part of the total package of care delivered to the patient. They suggest that physiotherapists, nurses, respiratory physiologist and lung function technicians have a key role in providing respiratory care. Trained and experienced staff should be available to support a 24 hour day service therefore regular training and refresher courses are necessary. This course provides a multidisciplinary opportunity to ensure learning links with the total package of care delivered to the patient. Providing these advanced skills will enable the practitioner to engage in critical thinking and integrate knowledge and theory into professional practice through ‘hands-on’ experience. This will enhance the effectiveness of the multidisciplinary respiratory team.

This module is available as a credit bearing module or can be taken as part of a postgraduate Certificate / Diploma.

Attendance

Module runs over a 12 week period in total. Students are expected to attend all classes and complete all coursework associated with the module.

Exact Teaching dates are 9th - 10th January 2018 plus 1 additional reflection day - Date TBC

Entry requirements

Applicants must:

(a)(i) Have a second class Honours degree or better in an Allied Health Profession subject from a university of the United Kingdom or the Republic of Ireland, from the Council for National Academic Awards, the National Council for Educational Awards, the Higher Education and Training Awards Council, or from an institution of another country which has been recognised as being of an equivalent standard; or

(ii) Have an equivalent standard in a Postgraduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Graduate Certificate or an approved alternative qualification; and

(iii) Where applicable be eligible for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council.

(iv) Where applicable have continued employment in an area relevant to the chosen modules.

(v) Have a minimum of one year's post-qualification experience (excluding course attendance).

(b) Provide evidence of competence in written and spoken English (GCSE grade C or equivalent) and for non-native English speakers, IELTS 7.0 (with no contributing band at less than 6.5) or, as an alternative to (a) (i) or (a) (ii) and/or (b):

(c) In exceptional circumstances, where an individual has substantial and significant experiential learning, a portfolio of written evidence demonstrating the meeting of graduate qualities (including subject-specific outcomes, as determined by the Course Committee) may be considered as an alternative entrance route. Evidence used to demonstrate graduate qualities may not be used for exemption against modules within the programme.

English language requirements for international applicants
The minimum requirement for this course is Academic IELTS 7.0 with no band score less than 6.5.

Ulster recognises a number of other English language tests and comparable IELTS equivalent scores.

Please DO NOT apply directly via the University online application system.

Commissioned application forms are distributed from Ulster to HSC Trust representatives normally in July/August for Semester 1 modules and November/December for Semester 2 modules.
