This short course provides participants with an overview of the several forms of niche tourism, discussing benefits to tourists and destinations. As tourism continues to develop and evolve through time, it is essential for Destination Management Organisations (DMOs) not only to be familiar with current types of tourism but to anticipate new and emergent niches.

In this section
The growing sophistication of tourists in the 21st century has caused a shift from traditional forms of tourism characterised by a mass standardised market fuelled, in particular, by inclusive tours focused on undifferentiated sun and sea locations towards more engaging and meaningful holidays. In order to satisfy the travel tastes and demands of the ‘new tourist’, a segmentation in tourism has occurred and forms of niche tourism have emerged such as those related to adventure, health, nature, and culture.
This short course aims to develop a knowledge and understanding of the niche tourism provision within the tourism industry globally. In providing a thorough theoretical and conceptual understanding of this important area of tourism provision, the aim is for participants to be able to consider the benefits to both tourists and destination areas of this type of tourism provision.
The course also aims to develop an understanding in students that tourism is always evolving and the challenge for Destination Management Organisations (DMOs) is not only to be familiar with current types of tourism but to anticipate new trends and emerging or developing forms of niche tourism.

100% Coursework – (1) Micro-video Presentation (30%) (maximum five minutes duration) providing a synopsis of the main findings and recommendations to accompany the full written report i.e. (2) Individual Report (70%) (3000 words) - a report following up on the micro-video presentation discussing in detail the salient elements relative to an existing niche tourism attraction in a destination of the participant’s choice including the attraction’s marketing and promotion, its funding and financial performance, its place in the market, the benefits to both tourists and the destination area provided by this type of niche tourism attraction, the challenges and issues associated with this type of niche tourism attraction, and opportunities for future development and improvement.
The course requires attendance for three individual consecutive days from 9.15am to 5.15pm in late March 2018 plus three additional ‘Learning Set’ days from 1.15pm to 4.15pm in April/May 2018 to meet with the tutors and student groups to develop assessed work (attendance is usually only required on one of the Learning Set days). English Language Requirements
International applicants whose first language is not English must meet the minimum English entrance requirements of the University, which is a minimum acceptable score for the British Council IELTS of 6.0 (with no contributing band of less than 5.5) or equivalent.
