This unique course is ideal for busy professionals who need an underpinning knowledge of employment relations law but are not able to commit the time to a full course of academic study. It provides a firm foundation in all areas of employment law.

It should be of interest to:

The Law School at Ulster University, in association with Legal Island and the Labour Relations Agency has created a short, six week CPPD accredited course in NI Employment Law and Practice that is designed to give HR professionals and others a comprehensive introduction into the legal framework that underpins effective policies around employment relations. Topics include:

  • Sources of employment law as they apply in NI
  • Contracts of employment
  • Working time including annual leave issues
  • Equality, diversity and discrimination law
  • Family friendly law in the workplace
  • Discipline and grievance handling - compliance with the LRA Code
  • ADR/Mediation and unfair dismissal and how to avoid it
  • Redundancy & TUPE

The lecturers are Mark McAllister, Employment Relations Manager, LRA, Esther McGuinness, Senior Lecturer in Law, Ulster University, Gareth Walls, Partner, A&L Goodbody and Scott Alexander, Head of L&D, Legal Island.

Assessment

100% Coursework – one 2000 word HR opinion

Attendance

This course requires attendance at the University's Belfast campus on six Wednesday afternoons from 1.15pm – 4.15pm for three hour workshops (lecture and practical session) starting Wednesday 4 October 2017 and finishing Wednesday 15 November 2017 (there is no workshop on Wednesday 1 November).

Entry requirements

Any undergraduate degree and 1+ year's HR experience. Those without a degree and additional HR experience are welcome to submit an application for consideration.

English Language Requirements

International applicants whose first language is not English must meet the minimum English entrance requirements of the University, which is a minimum acceptable score for the British Council IELTS of 6.0 (with no contributing band of less than 5.5) or equivalent.
