Study Interactive Multimedia Design at Ulster University in the United Kingdom.

Interactive Multimedia Design aims of produce interactive computing professionals with a deep understanding of and the interplay between technology and design.

The course will provide trained graduates who understand and can synthesise information technology practice with the relevant design principles. In particular, they will be conversant with aspects of computer-based interactive multimedia, including practical creative skills and theoretical awareness of the complex interplay of social, economic, psychological, technical and aesthetic issues underpinning the subject. With their specialist knowledge and skills they can adapt their chosen career in the diverse creative practices associated with interactive design and the Web.

If you want to become a professional with expertise in computing and design, then you should consider this course. You will be developing dynamic websites using the latest technologies such as jQuery on the client browser and PHP/MySQL on the server. The degree uses Adobe software as the basis for the preparation and editing of images, logos and animation. You will be encouraged to develop the ability to access and digest information from a range of sources, to use data and make sound technical decisions independently. You will also be encouraged to develop verbal and written communication and presentation skills as well as the ability to work as part of a team.

In this section

About

This course is offered at the Jordanstown campus by the Faculty of Computing and Engineering. If you want to become a professional with expertise in computing and design, then you should consider this course. You will be developing dynamic websites using the latest web technologies such as jQuery on the client and PHP/MySQL on the server.

You undertake six modules in Year 1 covering subjects such as HTML authoring, multimedia authoring, communication design and data visualisation, academic skills relevant to the sector and configuring web servers. In Year 2, further core modules extend your skills in programming for the web and introduce topics relevant to professional employment that includes working in teams.

In Year 3 you undertake a year's work experience, in the UK, Ireland or Europe.

You return to the University in Year 4 for a final year of academic study in which you hone your skills on modern Internet applications and also research into emerging technologies. You also undertake a major project that involves the analysis, design, implementation, testing and evaluation of the solution to a substantial software-related problem.

The Web pervades every aspect of our day-to-day lives from the gadgets in our pockets to how we interact with others. Industry needs dynamic, enthusiastic graduates with interests across the computing and design spectrum for web development.

What types of jobs are available?

Given the variety of applications of computing that includes design, there are jobs available in numerous fields for example: software development, education and web design.

Do I need to have studied ICT or Art at school or college?

A discipline with such diversity requires students with a variety of interests and backgrounds therefore you do not need to have studied Art or ICT however, we will look for evidence of a passion and enthusiasm for this dynamic, fast-moving discipline.

Attendance

Four years including placement. Full-time.

Typically each day during semester 1 and 2. There are no timetabled activities on Wednesday afternoons. Years 1, 2 and 4 of the course are delivered over two taught semesters (September to May). Year 3 students are expected to undertake a placement working for a company, typically over a calendar year.

Year one

Academic Study Skills for Multimedia Students

Year: 1

SUMMARY

Studying involves a complex set of practical and intellectual skills which must be established, honed and practiced. This module will help and encourage students to identify and adopt these skills. Students will be taught to understand and apply the principles of knowledge elicitation to inform responses to design briefs as well as present and defend their concepts against critical questioning. Students will also be taught to consider the Social, Legal, Economic, Political and Technial (SLEPT) issues of their concepts.

Managing Web Platforms and Content

Year: 1

The use of the Internet by businesses and people continues to grow at an incredible rate, encompassing business-to-business and business-to-consumer e-commerce, services provided by government for their citizens, together with the use of social media across the population. This module examines web platforms and content and the management of the resources and services that are made possible by the platform and content technology provision.

Web Authoring

Year: 1

This module will introduce the technical concepts that underpin web authoring. Understanding of these concepts will be reinforced via tutorial sessions. Application of these technical concepts will be facilitated through the use of web authoring tools in practical sessions to enhance the technical skills for the creation and styling of multimedia content.

Introduction to Communication Design

Year: 1

This module will introduce students to a range of concepts and theories required to gain an understanding of the principles surrounding areas of communication design which inform multimedia.

This will enable students to develop their critical thinking skills, communication skills via informed debate and writing and preparation skills. The module also offers an introduction to the study skills essential for undergraduate learning and encourages reflective practice through the use of an online journal.

Imaging and Data Visualisation

Year: 1

This module is all about understanding and creating images. Using static imagery as a starting point we explore imagery in sequence, introducing storytelling and narrative. We consider storyboards and how users move through information. Alongside this we develop our students? understanding of narrative and sequential (linear and non-linear) pathways. How information is structured can help us navigate a particular subject or understand the world around us. Introducing students to different methods for analysing data and considering how information might be presented, the module looks at how facts, data, statistics and ideas might be visually interpreted in a variety of ways. To use these effectively we must learn how to conceive, create and apply images, static or moving, that are constructed to deliver specific information to specific user groups in the most efficient way.

Year two

Content Authoring

Year: 2

This module will introduce students to a number of key multimedia applications and therefore provide the core practical skills required to solve design problems using the available technologies as a foundation for the rest of their course. The students will understand the concepts of image resolution, file size and optimisation for delivery over various mediums.The students will be taught how to storyboard concepts. The students will also be taught to understand and apply the principles of Human Computer Interaction.

Dynamic Web Authoring - Client View

Year: 2

If a web author is to be successful then they must be capable of producing standards compliant, accessible and secure dynamic interactive client-side systems. Such an approach extends basic, static, web authoring techniques and forms a basis for data driven websites and more advanced web based applications. This module allows students to establish a sound understanding of client-side dynamic website authoring techniques and technologies.

Integrated Multimedia Development

Year: 2

This module is designed to prepare students for working in real world projects that use a range of contemporary technologies and where they will be required to serve in a number of team roles. The module also will give students appreciation of broader issues e.g. those associated with seeking funding support to sustain developmental progress.

Professional Development

Year: 2

This module is intended to support students in developing the broad professional awareness necessary for seeking and obtaining employment.

Dynamic Web Authoring - Server View

Year: 2

This module is designed to provide students with a good understanding of data driven web authoring technology and practical experience. This module allows students to build upon their knowledge acquired during the earlier stages of the course and introduces more advanced interaction tools and techniques. The module will also contribute to students' understanding of programming.

Narrative and Storytelling

Year: 2

This module seeks to give students the confidence to use narrative both in their creative work and in constructing critical debate through combining the theories and practices of how a story unfolds over time by using art direction as a model to lay out information and control its pacing.

Creative Entrepreneurship

Year: 2

On completion of this module students will have gained an awareness and understanding of the rich potential that digital product design offers. Through this context they will also have been introduced to the wide range of product and business methods needed by the contemporary interactive designer. This knowledge will pave the way for the students to progress to Level 6, where the understanding and awareness of the content covered in this module will form a foundation on which they build.

Year three

Professional Practice - Computing

Year: 3

This module enables students who have secured a placement job to complete a period of appropriate work experience in a supportive environment. Students will have opportunities to gain employability skills, reflect upon the applicability of their subject specific skills, and gain insight into the graduate job market. Students who successfully complete the module are eligible for the award of Diploma in Professional Practice (DPP) or Diploma in Professional Practice International (DPPI).

International Academic Studies

Year: 3

This module is optional

This module provides an opportunity to undertake an extended period of study outside the UK and Republic of Ireland. Students will develop an enhanced understanding of computing whilst generating educational and cultural networks.

Year four

Future and Emerging Technology for Multimedia

Year: 4

This module allows students to develop specialist knowledge of future and emerging technologies related to multimedia and to develop their research skills by identifying, researching, evaluating and reporting on future and emerging technologies.

Advanced Web Applications

Year: 4

This module intends to introduce the final year IMD students advanced Web technologies and applications. It will focus on the fundamental concepts, principles, enabling technologies and practices of advanced Web applications. In particular, the module will concentrate on Web 2.0 and Web 3.0 technologies and applications. Students will have the opportunity to apply previously learnt Web programming skills to the development of novel applications, and further extend their knowledge scope towards emerging Web technologies and applications.

Major Project

Year: 4

Students are required to undertake a major project during the final year of the course. The project module allows a selected topic area to be investigated in depth and for a solution to be developed in response. Within the project, the student is expected to integrate and apply material from other modules in the course.

Rich Internet Application Development

Year: 4

Rich Internet Applications have become a major focus of user interface design and software development. This module will enable students to understand relevant technical principles and develop practical user interface design and software development skills to achieve the levels of interactivity, visual richness, functional capability and usability expected of rich internet applications of medium complexity.

Web Computer Graphics and Animation

Year: 4

Computer graphics and animation are important for many applications, including web page design, GUI development, games and simulations, digital photography and cinema, medical and scientific visualisation. This module introduces the subject from the perspective of computing. The student will learn about the hardware, models and algorithms for acquiring, generating, manipulating, displaying, storing and communicating 2D and 3D scenes, digital images, animations and video. The student will also learn how to implement such techniques in computer software and modelling languages.

We recognise a range of qualifications for admission to our courses. In addition to the specific entry conditions for this course you must also meet the University’s General Entrance Requirements.

The GCE A Level requirement for this course is 320 UCAS tariff points including grades BBB. All subject areas considered.

BTEC

The requirement for this course is BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma with overall award profile of DDM to include at least 10 unit distinctions. All subject areas considered.

Irish Leaving Certificate

Overall Irish Leaving Certificate Highers requirement for this course is 320 UCAS tariff points including A2A2B3B3B3 (typical grade profile). All subject areas considered.

Minimum Irish Leaving Certicate Ordinary Grade C3 in English and Mathematics also required.

Scottish Highers

The Scottish Highers requirement for this course is 320 UCAS tariff points including AAABC. All subject areas considered.

Scottish Advanced Highers

The Scottish Advanced Highers requirement for this course is 320 UCAS tariff points including ABB. All subject areas considered.

International Baccalaureate

Minimum 27 points (13 at higher level). Grade 4 in Mathematics and English Language also required in overall profile.

Access to Higher Education (HE)

The entry requirement for this course is successful completion of a Ulster University validated Access route with Overall 72% and 72% in Mathematics. Equivalent Mathematics qualifications considered for the Mathematics requirement.

English Language Requirements

English language requirements for international applicants
The minimum requirement for this course is Academic IELTS 6.0 with no band score less than 5.5. Trinity ISE: Pass at level III also meets this requirement for Tier 4 visa purposes.

Ulster recognises a number of other English language tests and comparable IELTS equivalent scores.

Teaching and learning assessment

The course promotes a distinctive pattern of teaching and learning practices. These include illustrated formal lectures and seminars, as well as small group support and individual critique sessions.

Lectures are used to present and illustrate basic theory and fundamental principles. Seminars elaborate lecture content, provide problem-solving opportunities and examine problem solutions in greater detail. Most modules will have laboratory classes to enable the practical application of theoretical concepts, facilitating deeper understanding of key topics. In programming laboratories there is an emphasis on small group tutoring and support.

The course is assessed by completing coursework and as a result encourages the development of a portfolio for each student that can be used as a showcase to employers for all the modules undertaken. A wide variety of methods of assessment are used including, logbooks or Blogs, individual and collaborative coursework assignments and class tests. In final year, assessment of knowledge and understanding is supplemented through assessment of the project dissertation and presentations.

As the course is cross-disciplinary, exemptions will be considered on an individual basis.

Career options

Graduates with skills from Interactive Multimedia Design have many career opportunities available to them in a wide range of commercial and industrial organisations developing new software for the Web, as project managers or information management. This can be in the local industry or across the world. There are also opportunities for postgraduate study in computing or design.

Work placement / study abroad

In Year 3 you undertake a year's work experience, in the UK, Ireland or Europe. You can also study in the USA. This leads to either the Diploma in Professional Practice for a placement year based in UK or Ireland; Diploma in Professional Practice (International) for a placement year based outside the UK or Ireland; or the Diploma in International Academic Studies if Year 3 is spent in study abroad such as in the USA.

BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT

Accredited by BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered IT Professional.

Academic profile

Members of the teaching team are Fellows of the Higher Education Academy and Members of the industry professional body; BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT. Through their research, knowledge transfer and placement activities, teaching staff are also actively engaged with the local software and IT industry. Many modules on the course are directly informed by the research activities of staff. This is also reflected in the number of recent graduates from the Course that have gone on to complete PhDs as part of the research that is on-going at the Jordanstown campus.

Additional mandatory costs

Tuition fees and costs associated with accommodation, travel and normal living are a part of university life. 

Where a course has additional mandatory expenses we make every effort to highlight them in the online prospectus. These may include residential visits, field trips, materials (e.g. art, design, engineering) inoculations, security checks, computer equipment, uniforms, professional memberships etc.

We aim to provide students with the learning materials needed to support their studies. Our libraries are a valuable resource with an extensive collection of books and journals as well as first-class facilities and IT equipment. Computer suites and free wifi is also available on each of the campuses.

There will be some additional costs to being a student which cannot be itemised and these will be different for each student. You may choose to purchase your own textbooks and course materials or prefer your own computer and software. Printing and binding may also be required. There are additional fees for graduation ceremonies, examination resits and library fines. Additional costs vary from course to course. 

Students choosing a period of paid work placement or study abroad as part of their course should be aware that there may be additional travel and living costs as well as tuition fees.
