The objective of this short course is to introduce students to the necessity for food regulation at the EU level and its evolution over time from the first legislative instruments until the present. The relationship between the EU institutions responsible for food legislation and the EU member states will be explored as well as law legislation implemented at EU level.

The objective of this short course is to introduce students to the necessity for food regulation at the EU level and its evolution over time from the first legislative instruments until the present. The relationship between the EU institutions responsible for food legislation and the EU member states will be explored as well as law legislation implemented at EU level.

Content:
• Food Regulatory Affairs: present, past and future
• EU Food law and Food regulation (Directive/Regulation/Decision in the context of food law)
• Major areas of Food law
• Significance of the BSE epidemic as a catalyst for change in the EU regulatory system for foods
• Green Paper on Food Law, White Paper on Food Safety and the moves to establish a European Food Safety Authority
• Selected major European food law cases

Assessment

A multiple choice questionnaire will be offered to students as a tool for self-assessment of the acquired knowledge.

This course is self-paced and open for enrolment at any time. It is delivered online through the University of Ulster's Virtual Learning Environment
