This module develops students understanding of the key components of contemporary, effective and responsive nursing services for people with learning disabilties and their famiies and relationships within the wider interdisciplinary team. Within the module students will explore the link between policy development, research and evidence-based practice. The module is available in a blended learning format. Assessment is by coursework.

In this section
Services for people with learning disabilities and their families are undergoing major changes in respond to the revised policy directions being implemented across Northern Ireland, other countries within the United Kingdom and internationally over the past decade. Services are increasingly focused on a model of citizenship and inclusion for people with learning disabilities and the need to provide individualised for people with learning disabilities and their family members in community based services. At the same time it is recognised that the number of people with learning disabilities will continue to increase over the next decade due increased live expectancy across all age groups. This will result in the need for more community based services that are able to effectively respond to the increasing complexity of the health needs of people with learning disabilities. The module will also provide students with opportunities to develop the necessary contemporary knowledge and skills to effectively contribute to the emerging services models.
This module is available as a standalone module / credit bearing module.
Module runs over a 12 week period in total. All students are expected to attend all classes associated with the programme and be punctual and regular in attendance (where applicable). Attendance will be monitored at the University and Employers are informed of all absences.
Module may also be available at Magee Campus if numbers permit.
- Satisfy the University’s general entry requirements as set out in the prospectus or demonstrate their ability to undertake the course through the accreditation of prior experiential learning (APEL). https://www.ulster.ac.uk/apply/entrance-requirements
- Normally required to hold a level 5 Diploma in Nursing (or equivalent) but the initial offer standard may vary from year to year.
