About

The BSc Hons Business Administration is an internationally recognised degree, designed to meet the needs of those who wish to work in a fast-paced business environment. It will appeal to a broad range of individuals including those currently in employment seeking to further their career, graduates of HNC/HND/Foundation Degree programmes who want to complete an honours degree or graduates of other subjects who wish to retrain in business.

You will study the key topics at the heart of business management practice including entrepreneurship, innovation, marketing, finance, operational management, technology management, international business, human resources and personal development.

The course content is dynamic, evolving as business issues change to ensure that what you are studying is relevant to industry and provides you with the knowledge to succeed in the ever-changing business environment.

You will graduate well equipped for a management career in industry and will possess additional skills in business-related areas including accounting, human resource management and marketing.

As well as excellent preparation for employment in a wide range of business contexts and settings, the course is also the perfect foundation for postgraduate study in strategic management programmes such as the MBA.

Attendance

Normally three calendar years (less with exemptions eg HND etc).

Semesters 1 and 2 require attendance at evening classes for two three hour sessions per week. These classes are normally held from 5.30pm on Monday and Tuesday.

The summer semester (Semester 3) is normally taught in blocks with each block consisting of four evening sessions. Both blocks will be held in mid June with an additional two evening sessions in late August.

Students will study modules to the value of 40 credit points in each semester. Each 20 credit point module has a total notional value of 200 effort hours. This includes approximately 36 tutor contact hours and the remainder being independent study.

A level

Normally Two A levels are required for entry

Whilst two ‘A’ levels are traditionally a prerequisite for entry to primary degree programmes, applicants with experience, who lack formal academic qualifications, may be admitted to the course if they can satisfy the Course Committee of their ability to complete the course satisfactorily. Exemptions may be granted from parts of the course where applicants already hold a higher academic or professional qualification providing evidence of relevant previous studies.

English Language Requirements

English language requirements for international applicants
The minimum requirement for this course is Academic IELTS 6.0 with no band score less than 5.5. Trinity ISE: Pass at level III also meets this requirement for Tier 4 visa purposes.

Ulster recognises a number of other English language tests and comparable IELTS equivalent scores.

Teaching and learning assessment

Lectures, seminars, practical exercises and workshops, group discussion, simulations, case studies, directed reading, independent learning, presentations, visiting speakers, use of information technology and web-based learning.

The teaching and learning approach allows students to have a high level of involvement and participation in the learning process whilst equipping them with the concepts, skills and experiences necessary for employability, and further career and personal development.

Many modules have a combination of continuous assessment and written examination at the end of the semester. Various assessment methods are used. Demonstration of knowledge and understanding is through a combination of coursework, presentations, written unseen examinations, practical business planning and research projects. Ability to use IT tools for business is developed through the preparation of coursework.

Each of the summer semester modules consist of continuous assessment and have a common theme of developing management in practice at increasing levels of strategic application.

Exemptions and transferability

Applicants who can provide evidence of previous relevant study, awarded in accordance with the Credit Accumulation Transfer Scheme, (CATS), may be considered for exemption from particular modules or to entry to later years of the course.

Students offering HNC, HND and FdSc qualifications will find this a particularly attractive route to topping up to Honours degree level.
