Architectural Engineering is an emerging professional discipline that combines the fields of architecture and engineering to deliver the functional buildings and their systems for the Built Environment of tomorrow.

The BEng (Hons) Architectural Engineering programme is new and the first of its kind in Ireland, specifically designed to meet the industrial demand for graduates in this interdisciplinary profession who are creative and innovative and who can work in building services, architectural integration, energy use in buildings and the application of renewable technologies throughout these isles and beyond. This programme aims to produce architecturally informed Building Services Engineers and Energy professionals able to deliver energy conscious and environmentally sustainable solutions for buildings.

As a graduate you will have high levels of competencies in the design and sizing of heating and cooling systems for buildings, electrical and energy supply and use, sanitation and environmental systems. You will be aware of the legislative drivers that affect the built environment and the need for a radical and sustainable approach to building services if the environmental impact of existing and new buildings is to be dramatically reduced.

The research informed BEng (Hons) Architectural Engineering programme offers a route to professional status in an exciting and diverse profession with excellent employment opportunities.

The course is accredited through the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) and the Energy Institute.

About

The Building services sector carries out £20 billion of work each year, roughly 3% of UK GNP. In any new construction project, building services typically account for 30% to 40% of the total cost. More recently CIBSE (Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers) have recognised the changing role of the building services engineer. The building services engineer of tomorrow must have a greater awareness of the total building concept through an integrated design approach and therefore emerging specialist areas like BIM, design and simulation tools, façade engineering or green building design have opened up potential new employment opportunities.

The European Commission has identified the green economy as a “key sector” offering “important job creation potential,” with renewables alone claimed to provide up to 3 million jobs across the EU to 2020. It has been reported that the UK’s £12.5 billion renewables industry supports 110,000 jobs across supply chain, and could support 400,000 by 2020. The report also reveals that the overall increase in market value from 2009/10 to 2010/11 was 11%, which far outstrips the economic growth over the same period of 1.4%.

The Architectural Engineering programmes provide graduates with an in-depth knowledge of building services engineering and energy including environmental systems relevant to the built environment.

You will have high levels of competencies in the design and sizing of heating and cooling systems for buildings, electrical and energy supply and use, and water supply and disposal both in buildings and complete systems. You will be aware of the legislative drivers that affect the built environment and the need for a radical and sustainable approach to building services if the environmental impact of existing and new buildings is to be dramatically reduced. Renewable Energy systems are an increasing focus for the delivery of zero carbon energy and you will have competences in the utilisation and building/site integration of these technologies.

A number of themes run through the programmes and provide a developmental continuum. The main themes are Energy, Building Services, Engineering Principles, Sustainability and Management.

Attendance

The BEng (Hons) degree with Diploma in Professional Practice (DPP) is a sandwich course of 4 years duration. Years 1, 2 & 4 each are comprised of modules totalling 120 credit points studied over 2 semesters. Year 3 is spent in supervised industrial placement carrying 60 credit points.

One credit point involves 10 hours of learning including directed and independent study.

A level

The A Level requirement for this course is 300 UCAS Tariff points to include BB in two science based subjects (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Technology and Design, Engineering, Environmental Technology, Construction and Engineering).

If not offering A-level Mathematics or AS-level Mathematics, a GCSE Mathematics at Grade B is required.

BTEC

Successful completition of BTEC award with DDM profile (to include 9 Distinctions) in Construction, Applied Science or Engineering.

The Extended Diploma should include a Distinction in one of the following:

Further Mathematics in Construction and the Built Environment, Mathematical Calculations for Science or Further Mathematics for Engineering Technicians.

Irish Leaving Certificate

Overall Irish Leaving Certificate profile 300 UCAS Tariff points to include grades BBBBB (from 5 Highers) in Mathematics and two other subjects from: Economics, Physics, Environmental Technology, Biology, Geography and Construction & Engineering.

If no Physics at Higher level, Grade C or above at Irish Ordinary is required in this subject.

Scottish Highers

The Scottish Highers requirement for this course is 300 UCAS Tariff points at Grades AABCC to include Mathematics at Grade B and one other subjects from: Economics, Environment Technology, Geography, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Construction and Engineering.

Scottish Advanced Highers

The Scottish Advanced Highers requirement for this course is 300 UCAS Tariff points at Grades BBB to include Mathematics and one other subject from: Economics, Environmental Technology, Geography, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Construction and Engineering.

International Baccalaureate

Overall International Baccalaureate profile minimum of 26 points (13 at higher level).

Access to Higher Education (HE)

Overall Access profile of 70% in Science and Mathematics; Physics and Engineering with 65% in Mathematics module for Year 1 entry.

GCSE

GCSE Profile to include grade C in English and Mathematics.

If no Mathematics at A/AS level offered, Grade B in Mathematics is required.

English Language Requirements

English language requirements for international applicants
The minimum requirement for this course is Academic IELTS 6.0 with no band score less than 5.5. Trinity ISE: Pass at level III also meets this requirement for Tier 4 visa purposes.

Ulster recognises a number of other English language tests and comparable IELTS equivalent scores.

Additional Entry Requirements

Successful completion of Foundation Degree in Building Services and Renewable Energies with an average of 55% or above for year 2 entry and successful completion for year 1 entry.

OtherBuilding Services and Construction related subjects may be considered for Year 1 or Year 2 entry.

Teaching and learning assessment

In Years 1 and 2 the emphasis is based upon knowledge acquisition and understanding using formal lectures, tutorials, laboratories and coursework. As students progress through level 4 into level 5, a more student centred teaching strategy is employed to encourage students to focus on autonomous learning through individual reading, research, laboratory experimentation and design. There are a mixture of individual and groupwork so that personal and inter-personal skills are developed.

Teaching methods include lectures, tutorials, practical work carried out in the laboratory and field, directed reading, individual and group design work, case studies, seminars, studio work, design/problem solving assignments, and IT based resources and research project.

Assessment is designed to incorporate diagnostic, formative and summative approaches. A wide range of assessment methods are utilised at different levels of the course linking teaching and learning strategies to ensure an appropriate level of rigour. The assessment methods include examination, coursework, essay, individual project and group project, case studies, site visit, seminar presentations, engineering laboratory report, computer simulation exercise, portfolio, problem solving, poster, class test, peer assessment, oral test, multiple choice questions, literature reviews, design and dissertation.

Exemptions and transferability

Applicants who have successfully completed studies equivalent in content and level to the year 1 modules are considered for direct entry into year 2.

Students may transfer to the programme on good academic standing from other courses in the school or university on condition that they meet the entry requirements of the course and enter at Level 4. Due to the unique nature of the programme students cannot transfer into a different level as they will not have the pre-requisites to proceed.

Career options

Embarking upon a career in Architectural Engineering can open a wide variety of career choices. You will be involved in the design of various building systems associated with industrial, commercial and residential buildings such as heating, ventilation and air conditioning, refrigeration, lighting, water service, drainage, plumbing, security and alarms, lifts, escalators, gas, electricity, and communication. You will work with architects, structural engineers, civil engineers and quantity surveyors in the design and construction of buildings. You will also have a growing role in the deployment of renewable energy systems and, sustainability and energy efficiency in buildings. You will be playing a key role in delivering the low carbon environment which will aid in combating climate change, fossil fuel depletion and reductions to fuel poverty.

The career development depends on the choice of specialisation and professional qualifications gained from appropriate professional body. Opportunities also exist to continue studies through the PhD research programmes in energy, infrastructure and sustainability issues.

Work placement / study abroad

Industrial Placement is a compulsory part of the programmes and shall normally consist of a minimum of 48 weeks of full-time work experience undertaken in Year 3. Industrial placement, for full-time students only, is regarded as an important component of the programme of study. Such experience sets the context of the final year studies and greatly enhances employment prospects.

Successful completion of the placement year leads to award of Diploma in Professional Practice (DPP) or Diploma in Professional Practice (International) (DPP(I)).

Additional mandatory costs

Tuition fees and costs associated with accommodation, travel and normal living are a part of university life. 

Where a course has additional mandatory expenses we make every effort to highlight them in the online prospectus. These may include residential visits, field trips, materials (e.g. art, design, engineering) inoculations, security checks, computer equipment, uniforms, professional memberships etc.

We aim to provide students with the learning materials needed to support their studies. Our libraries are a valuable resource with an extensive collection of books and journals as well as first-class facilities and IT equipment. Computer suites and free wifi is also available on each of the campuses.

There will be some additional costs to being a student which cannot be itemised and these will be different for each student. You may choose to purchase your own textbooks and course materials or prefer your own computer and software. Printing and binding may also be required. There are additional fees for graduation ceremonies, examination resits and library fines. Additional costs vary from course to course. 

Students choosing a period of paid work placement or study abroad as part of their course should be aware that there may be additional travel and living costs as well as tuition fees.
