This short course explores organisational innovation from an operational or practice perspective as a key aspect of business development.

Summary

The course covers Innovation in Practice through a Business Process Innovation from both theoretical and practical perspectives. It introduces participants to the crucial value creating processes within organisations. Moreover, the nature of business models is examined and creative approaches to new business models explored. Business Process Innovation is evaluated in different organisational contexts - both large and small organisations as well as in different sectors of the economy.

About

This short course seeks to explore organisational innovation from an operational or practice perspective. This approach explores the innovation process where Business Process Innovation is viewed as a key element of business improvement and business development. Process innovation can be seen as a learning cycle, involving a process of experiment, experience, reflection and consolidation. Managing the process is primarily a function of the creation of conditions under which learning opportunities emerge and are exploited. What is learned and developed with each cycle of creativity and innovation is not only technical knowledge, but also knowledge about how to manage the process itself. It is important to understand the routines, which the organisation develops to enable the learning process, and in particular in the ways in which individual and shared learning can be mobilised. In addition to a generic outline of process innovation, the course covers more specific applications such as lean sigma process innovations.

The aim of the course is to introduce key concepts relating to Innovation in Practice within the field of Business process Innovation and to develop an understanding of both theory and how these topics can be applied in a range of organisational settings.

The course has three themes based on the three days:

  • Process theory
  • Supportive Organisational Structure
  • Process innovation models and methodologies
  • Process innovation measures.

DAY 2: Theme 2:

  • Specific applications of Business process Innovation
  • Lean value flows
  • Six Sigma and process capability
  • Lean sigma methodologies
  • Lean sigma process measures.

DAY 3: Theme 3:

  • Business process Innovation and knowledge requirements
  • Case study settings
  • Case analysis
  • Case generalisation
  • Assignment requirements

Assessment

100% coursework - written report (3000 - 5000 words) demonstrating a modern understanding of Business Process Innovation. Participants should reflect on their own organisations or target organisations and demonstrate the applicability of the theories, framework and discussions to specific settings.

Attendance

This course requires attendance on three consecutive days from 9.30am – 4.30pm on 13, 14 and 15 November 2019 with one follow-up day on 22 November 2019.

English Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English must meet the minimum English entrance requirements of the University and will need to provide recent evidence of this (certified within the last two years).

Most of our courses require a minimum English level of IELTS 6.0 or equivalent, with no band score under 5.5. Trinity ISE: Pass at level III also meets this requirement.
