In this section


This course aims to develop knowledge and understanding of the key issues in the development and operations of a visitor attraction including staging events at such venues. It highlights the range, importance and value of visitor attractions within the tourism industry and allows participants to explore the development process for establishing a new visitor attraction. In addition, the course will look at current and future trends for this important sector.

Visitor attractions are a crucially important component of any destination’s tourism product and an important contributor to a region’s economy. For those aspiring to (or already) working in this sector of industry, an understanding of the important issues related to the visitor attraction market, development of such attractions and associated visitor and interpretive centres will be a necessary element of their overall professional development. With many visitor attractions increasingly involved in hosting and staging events, this also forms an important component of the study of visitor attractions which will be undertaken.

The course will appeal to a wide variety of interests and backgrounds such as:

  • Those currently employed in the leisure, event and tourism sectors who wish to progress to managerial positions.

  • Those who have an undergraduate qualification in a non-cognate area and who wish to enhance career opportunities within the field of event management.

  • Those with a cognate undergraduate qualification who are ambitious, and who wish to further develop their knowledge and skills in this specialist area.

100% Coursework - (1) Individual Essay - a 2500 word essay, which will examine a topical issue affecting the field of visitor attractions in the 21st century (50%) and (2) Research Project - participants will be required to propose a new event for a visitor attraction and conduct a SWOT analysis for this event (2500 words) (50%).


The course requires attendance on three individual consecutive days from 9.15am to 5.15pm on 27, 28 February and 1 March 2019 plus three additional ‘Learning Set’ days on 6, 13 and 20 March 2019 to meet with the tutors and student groups to develop assessed work. Please note a time to attend the Learning Set is agreed with students during the course. Attendance is usually only required for one morning or afternoon session on one of the Learning Set dates.

Entry requirements

Any undergraduate degree.

English Language Requirements

Applicants whose first language is not English must meet the minimum English entrance requirements of the University and will need to provide recent evidence of this (certified within the last two years).

Most of our courses require a minimum English level of IELTS 6.0 or equivalent, with no band score under 5.5. Trinity ISE: Pass at level III also meets this requirement.
