This course addresses the scope of remotely-sensed images as another source of GIS data as well as extending mutual benefits of data integration.
This course offers participants the opportunity to study the principles and applications of remote sensing and image analysis and to explore links between remote sensing and GIS. Participants are expected to become familiar with theoretical foundations and are allowed to demonstrate technical principles through a series of software-based practical exercises using ERDAS Imagine 2013.

In this section
This short course serves as both an introduction to image analysis and as an advanced link with GIS. As such, it addresses the scope of remotely-sensed images as another source of GIS data as well as extending mutual benefits of data integration.
The aim of the course is to give participants a thorough understanding and practical experience of digital remote sensing. System principles are theoretically discussed and practically demonstrated by major proprietary and customised software. The course facilitates hands-on experience of ERDAS Imagine. Skills will be constantly developed through a series of practical exercises and an individual project.

100% Coursework – (1) Project presented in the format of a scientific poster with the analysis centring on using remote sensing data to analyse and quantify environmental change through time (80%), (2) Progress Report (500 words) to be submitted mid-way through the course to outline progress on the poster (10%) and (3) Online Test testing knowledge and understanding of course concepts (10%).
This course is delivered online for 6 weeks with no on-campus attendance requirements starting 24 September 2018.
Applicants are generally expected to have a minimum 2.2 honours degree with a substantial component of geography, environmental science or computing.
Applicants with qualifications in other relevant disciplines or with academic qualifications below 2.2 honours will also be considered on individual merit. In such cases, previous experience of GIS and competence in day-to-day computing will be an advantage, and should be explained in detail on the application form.
English Language Requirements
Applicants whose first language is not English must meet the minimum English entrance requirements of the University and will need to provide recent evidence of this (certified within the last two years).
Most of our courses require a minimum English level of IELTS 6.0 or equivalent, with no band score under 5.5. Trinity ISE: Pass at level III also meets this requirement.
