About

This short course is part of the Linen Biennale N. Ireland 2018 programme.

Flax has many known qualities and applications from soaps, gels, dyes and papers and of course the creation of Linen Fabric. Its history is well known and long established. A more recent development is to blend flax with clay to create paper clay. This creates an extremely robust and forgiving material ideal for the creation of 3 dimensional objects, vessels and sculpture. The Ceramics Studio of the Belfast School of Art is now offering a 2 day on campus workshop where the potentiality of this material will be thoroughly investigated for its technical and visual qualities.

he workshop will be supported by technical demonstrations in regard to clay preparation, hand building, firing and glazing Flax paper clay.

The workshop will also examine themes relevant to the material qualities of Flax and Linen – weaving and stitching clay, blending, dying and staining clay bodies leading to constructed forms from flat sheets of paper clay.

A lecture will examine artists who create ceramic works from blended clay and flax which will also support starting points for workshop participants. Test pieces and finished objects made from paper clay will also be available to participants to examine and handle.

The Ceramics studio is fully equipped to support this Project Workshop and participants will have open access to slab rollers, wall mounted extruders, wheels, spray booths, clays and glazes and the kiln room. Finished objects from the Project Workshop can be displayed in the showcase in the main foyer of the Ulster University Belfast Campus.
