About

This course introduces the concepts and requirements of environmental impact assessment, the methodology of planning and carrying out an environmental audit and the use of environmental management systems.

Environmental management plays an important part in policy, planning and decision making in government and industry. Those intending to follow careers in environmental management need to be aware of how technical, economic and environmental considerations are taken into account in the planning and operation of projects through the use of EIA, SEA, Environmental Audits and EMS. This course provides the opportunity to develop some of the specific skills needed to perform the key environmental management roles in business and industry.

This course aims to promote awareness of the problems of balancing the maintenance of environmental quality with the requirements of industry and the general public, provide training and foster skills in a range of environmental assessment techniques and EIA, enable students to appreciate the need for properly researched information to support strategic and operational environmental management decisions, and to be aware of the means by which such information can be obtained and evaluated. It also aims to provide a forum within which participants can discuss practical environmental managementproblems and engage with the wider socio-economic, ethical and philosophical aspects of environmental decision making.
