EXPERIENCE: Student Intern Bursary Opportunity

CHERP is looking for Student Interns. The internship role is supporting teaching staff in new teaching methods and technologies. This is a great opportunity to gain experience and employability skills.

Looking to earn some money, gain work experience, enhance your employability and skills, and have an impact on student learning experience?

The Centre for Higher Education Research and Practice is currently looking for expressions of interest from current Ulster University students to take part in a scheme to become CHERP Learning Partners from September 2021.

Expressions of interest are restricted to campus of study and to be eligible you must be a full time registered student at the time the role begins in September 2021 at one of our main Northern Ireland campuses in Belfast/Jordanstown, Coleraine or Magee.

This is a fantastic flexible opportunity that will fit around your student life.


The role

Your role will be to help teaching staff at Ulster, facilitate new creative teaching methods and emerging technologies in their practice by providing just-in-time support and assistance in class when they need it.

For those in Pathway there will also be opportunities to work in partnership with staff on learning and teaching projects.

You may also help evaluate the effectiveness of these methods and technologies through your lived student experiences and help to create digital case studies.

There are 2 pathways # available:

  • Pathway A 32 days* during Semester 1 and 2 (16 days* each semester)
  • Pathway B 12 days* during the start of semester 1 and 2 (6 days* each semester) - Belfast only

What that means for you

This means that you will help bring the student voice to new and innovative teaching practices at Ulster to help shape what future teaching looks like.

You will have opportunities to give your perspective on connecting with students on what matters to students and to work as partners with staff.

Successful students will have the opportunity to enhance their employability skills through authentic real life experiences that may help prepare them for work life after their degree.


What you will get paid

This is not employment but a learning and teaching bursary will be available for all successful learning partners.

  • Pathway A: bursary = £1750 paid in monthly instalments from Oct to May
  • Pathway B: bursary = £656.25 paid in 2 instalments in October 2021 and February 2022

A full payment schedule will be shared at the induction event on 3 June 2021.

NB. This is a scholarship/bursary, as such you are responsible for any tax implications if your earnings go above the threshold, please see the HMRC Income Manual.

Evidence providing alignment to visa restrictions restrictions will be required if successfully appointed a learning partner and would be a condition of the offer if applicable.


Where you will be based

Each successful learning partner will be based on their base campus of studies (Belfast/Jordanstown, Magee or Coleraine), although depending on public health guidelines the role may be delivered fully online, face-to-face or a combination of both.

How to prepare for the role

Successful applicants will be required to undertake a 1 day online induction on 3 June 2021 from 10.30 - 3pm to get you ready for your role and provide an opportunity to meet your fellow interns.

There will also be further ongoing support and professional development as required.

*NB. Interns must continue to remain in good academic standing to continue in the role, this will be reviewed monthly to ensure academic studies is not affected by the role.

Travel costs to and from the workshop from your base campus will be in line with Ulster University policy.

The learning partner role can be terminated at any stage after agreement with the student and CHERP, any outstanding bursary payments will be calculated on a pro-rata basis.
