About the Team:

The ‘MEANINGFUL ASSESSMENT FOR SKILLS CLASS’  team aim was to engage 2nd year  student nurses in clinical skills training using a scaffolding approach to learning. The approach was focused on giving students a high quality authentic learning experience that was transferrable to the clinical setting. The focus was student centred and it allowed the learner to retain independence and a degree of autonomy over their learning.

The motivated, and enthusiastic team are all staff in Ulster School of Nursing and experienced nurses with a wide range of clinical experience who developed a shared vision and goal. Sarah Penney (FHEA) Module Coordinator for this innovative module, Gerard Baxter (FHEA) Mary Marren (FHEA) Bridie Logue and Janice Reid. The cohesive team was the lynchpin to the success of this innovation, with each team members voice holding equal weight and allowed for fresh ideas to be implemented. Collaboration and feedback with the students and former module coordinator Diane Lyttle enabled us to  push boundaries to enhance the student experience

The new assessment involved-  formative online tests to help prepare for a final summative online test and an assessed scenario where  subgroups of 6-7 students were video recorded during a practical skills assessment This assessed scenario enabled students to demonstrate not only their clinical competence but to illustrate a person centred approach for their patients.

Overall this helps students make relevant links between theoretical knowledge and simulated practice in preparation for practice learning where they will engage with people with complex needs in various care environments.
