BSc (Hons) Sports Studies
Irish Olympic Sailing Team
Ulster University helped me achieve my current career success by...
giving me a great understanding of the sports industry, goal setting and planning with my Olympic campaign.
Activities I was involved in at Ulster to enhance my employability
Managing to work as part of a team, organising meetings and delegating roles to individuals based on their strengths.
Going on a placement was invaluable.
How placement enhanced my employability
Gaining hands on experience gives you the practical knowledge which is gained in the workforce, this is difficultly to gather through textbooks.
How study abroad enhanced my employability
Working in different cultures helps to broaden your knowledge and experience. Seeing how organisations work, makes you adaptable to various businesses.
Top 3 most significant steps on my career path so far
- Qualification for the 2012 London Olympics, this was my first Games and it was a big step towards achieving my Olympic Dream.
- Graduating from the university of Ulster after many years of study while training for the Olympics.
- Taking leadership to go forward with the Irish team towards the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Planning of a new project and leading as a senior athlete. This will be my third Olympic campaign.
What would your advice to students be?
Make sure you choose the right career path, choose something that your passionate about and go for it 100%, this has to be something that you will make sacrifices for.
Work hard and be prepared to go through many highs and lows. The end goal of success is worth all the lows.
