Ulster University helped me achieve my current career success by...

enabling me to achieve a career in event marketing which I had enjoyed. In one assignment I looked at the socio-economic impact of building sports arenas in the USA. I interviewed the company who I now work for and this was a real turning point for me. - Clare Gallagher

My Journey

  • Activities I was involved in at Ulster to enhance my employability

I spent my placement year studying sports management and marketing in a college in the USA.

It was a real learning curve for me and I achieved a wealth of experience while at college in America.

  • How placement enhanced my employability

While on placement I spent my time at college north of Tampa Bay, Florida. I undertook a number of internships and experience in sports arenas in the local area which gave me invaluable experience for when I applied for a job after graduation.

  • How study abroad enhanced my employability

I cannot speak highly enough in support of study abroad programmes. It was through extra courses and work experience in the USA, that I could not have attained back home, that meant that I was able to get experience that provided me with a unique advantage to my peers.

  • Top 3 most significant steps on my career path so far

    1. I am delighted that for the past 16 years I have worked for Northern Ireland's premier indoor sports and entertainment venue the SSE Arena, Belfast. I joined as marketing assistant 6 months before the arena opened in June 2000.
    2. Next big step occurred when I was developing my career with the venue to become Sales and Hospitality Manager.
    3. My last big step occurred last year when I was involved in the naming rights agreement with SSE. This was an enormous achievement, personally for me and also for the arena.

What would your advice to students be?

Set yourself apart from your peers.
