The Law and Business of Film and Television
This innovative industry-collaborative short course will be taught by some of the most renowned working professionals in the international media legal and production fields. The principal goal of the course is to create employability to service this burgeoning sector. The teaching will be problem based and practical, with a goal of creating a work-ready cohort for legal and business services in film, television, and related industries.
The teaching team will be led by New York based Russell Smith, dubbed 'The Maharaja of Media' by American Lawyer magazine. Smith is a partner of SmithDehn LLP, one of the fastest growing and most renowned specialist American based media and entertainment law firms, now with a growing Northern Ireland operation based at the North West Regional Science Park. SmithDehn LLP, dubbed "legal heavies" by The Wall Street Journal, has attracted clients that have ranged from studios like Paramount Pictures, Lionsgate Films, 20th Century Fox, Sony Pictures, and Media Rights Capital, to television companies like HBO, ITV, Channel 4, and BBC America, to talented players such as Sacha Baron Cohen and Courteney Cox.
2015's course featured visiting professors such as the Chief Counsel of HBO, top legal executives from Twentieth Century Fox and the former Head of Legal for the Discovery networks. 2016's course will feature visiting professors of equal calibre.
