Stephen Dow (heraldBLACK) - Printmaker
About Stephen Dow (heraldBLACK)
When did you start taking an interest in art?
My favourite book as a child was 'Learn With Words', a book filled with full page illustrations and descriptions. I loved how a picture could evoke a feeling, that an image could create an atmosphere as powerfully as language.
What course have you studied or currently studying?
I graduated in 1997 from the BA (Hons) Combined Studies in Art & Design. The course allowed study in various departments, I focused on textiles & photography.
Who or what inspires your art?
My surroundings, the shapes and structures I see everyday be that architectural or botanical. I will take photos or gather items then use those as a starting point for my prints.
What do you hope people take from your work?
I'm happy for people to see what they want in my work, whether it's response to the form or colour in my work. What I would like to express is that by purchasing from an artist/ maker you are supporting that individual, facilitating their creative practice, enabling them to fund their studio space and materials & allowing them to continue to pursue their artisitic business. For that, I am greatly appreciative.
Do you have any other interests?
I love to get out & about with the dogs, they have an uncanny knack of stopping you from getting too introspective. They also mean I walk about 40 miles a week without noticing it! A good gallery visit also interests me, kettle's yard in cambridge being one of my favourites.
What is your favourite memory of your time at Ulster University?
I always really loved the end of year shows. It was a great opportunity to see all the great work being made in other departments in the college. Leafing through the artists' notebooks was my favourite thing, a good insight into the making process.
What is next for you creatively?
I had my first solo exhibition in March 2019 so I'm excited by the opportunities this has brought about. I also have had my first stockist in the USA this spring so I will be working hard to push the wholesale side of my business too. There have been some licensing possibilities I'm keen to pursue as I've always been interested to see my work used in different contexts.
