About Rebekah McBride
When did you start taking an interest in art?
As a child I was given colouring in books and dot to dots. I remember making my own dot to dot books ( kind of DADA really). I kept drawing and painting and learning and that's how I have always spent my time.
What course have you studied or currently studying?
I studied Product and Furniture Design.
Who or what inspires your art?
The beauty in everyday objects, when the light hits something just right and you see it for its form and not its purpose. I love to think about the psychology of colour and ratio, this is a big influence. Artists like Joan Miró and Egon Schiele. Northern Irish humour is something special and it has an influence on my work too.
What do you hope people take from your work?
I hope they see things differently, I hope they pause for a moment.
Do you have any other interests?
I like to cook, cycle and explore. I have also done some acting for a local video production which, I found enjoyable. I am learning French and I write poetry.
What is your favourite memory of your time at Ulster University?
In final year we decided to have a formal, it was Bauhaus themed. As I was the class representative I had to organise it. For the awards we gave out 16 inch mannequin models.
What is next for you creatively?
I work for a conservations and restoration studio in Belfast and I have to learn how to do traditional decorative painting, its not taught here so I will have to go to Brussels for a bit.
