Natasha Rollinson - Jewellery
About Natasha Rollinson
When did you start taking and interest in art?
I knew that I wanted to make jewellery from the first time I worked with silver. Aged sixteen, I took a short course one Summer at the Edinburgh College of Art and made a wide, hammered cuff in a minimal, modern style that would still fit in with the style of things I make now, all these years later.
What course have you studied or currently studying?
I have studied and trained intensively n jewellery, first with my degree at Ulster University, then in Reading at Bishopsland, a selective postgraduate residency, followed by two years in Kilkenny with the Crafts Council of Ireland, before moving to London to live and work as a goldsmith for six years.
Who or what inspires your art?
My inspiration comes from all over the place, but my work is underpinned by precision, versatility and nature inspired geometry.
What do you hope people take from your work?
I strive to create effortlessly elegant jewellery that transcends time and season and I am motivated by the emotional connections within jewellery. The sentiment that jewellery holds and the specialness in pieces that can be passed on is a truly amazing thing and a joy to be part of, whether it is a gift for yourself or someone you care about, or a symbol of love that binds two people together.
Do you have any other interests?
I love to travel, I come from a widespread background and find exploring other parts of the world hugely inspiring. This year I hope to make a trip to explore the rich history of Istanbul. After years living in London, I also have a renewed love for the calm beauty of the Irish landscape!
What is your favourite memory of your time at Ulster University?
Having the time and space to work creatively with feedback, support and advice from good tutors and technicians. Sadly the old building where Jewellery & Silversmithing and ceramics studios were based has now gone.
What is next for you creatively?
Last year was a big year for me creatively as a ten year dream to design a creative home for the jewellery that I love to make became a reality. The studio is a great space to work and turning my dream space into a reality has been fantastic! 2019 has a lot on the horizon - I will be focusing on growing the brand as a destination for refined collections, bespoke designs and unique wedding and engagement rings.
