Ellen Nesbitt - Ceramics
About Ellen Nesbitt
When did you start taking an interest in art?
My interest in Art began in my childhood. Both in the classroom and at home, being creative was what I enjoyed the most. When I was able to leave school and focus on Art Studies I found myself immersed in an environment that introduced to me so many fields of art. This continued into University and as my passion got stronger I was able to develop into a maker that liked to work with many things,
What course have you studied or currently studying?
I graduated in Ceramics, Jewellery & Silversmithing Course at Belfast School of Art in 2018.
Who or what inspires your art?
My making of work has been inspired by personal experiences. The colours and materials we relate to particular memories, I believe can evoke thought and emotions, connecting us to the work.
What do you hope people take from your work?
I always work with vibrant colours. I feel it instils a sense of happiness, warm and joy. I hope that by putting this into functional and decorative homeware that people can have something unique in their daily space that gives them the same joy.
Do you have any other interests?
Edible Art! I was always brought up around baking and being somewhat creative in the kitchen. So from my teenage years I decided to get into making and decorating cakes! it's something that is completely self-taught and has been developed over the years, but I love to make any sweet treat look too good to eat, especially cakes!
What is your favourite memory of your time at Ulster University?
I've had so many amazing memories from my time at University and I would come back and do it all over again in a heartbeat! But I think final year for me was my best year, I can honestly look back and say I had the most enjoyable and fun time making that year. I felt like I was the most experimental I had ever been and absolutely loved it.
What is next for you creatively?
Since graduating I have been undertaking a course on Counselling. I hope that it will help my knowledge and understanding of therapy, where I hope to combine and explore the profession of Art Therapy.
