Ulster University graduate, Rakia Alouane

An International Taekwondo champion is graduating from Ulster University this year after completing her studies while also competing in three European competitions since 2015.

Rakia Alouane from Bangor graduates with a BSc Hons in Health Physiology on July 6 and has already started preparing for the 2018 European Championships in Estonia.

Rakia said:

“During my studies, the main issue I faced was balancing competitions with tests.  I competed in three European competitions, which meant I had a hard training schedule to keep up with.  I was lucky to have a supportive network through my lecturers and course director who were very understanding.

“Having such a tight schedule motivated me to work even harder and I’m delighted to be graduating this year."

Reflecting on her time as a student, Rakia said:

“I found studying at Ulster University a great experience and I’ve made friends for life.  The closeness of our class made the experience even better.  The course has definitely set me up for great opportunities and I was able to enjoy a short placement opportunity through the University at the Downe Hospital Cardiac Ward.  The experience was fantastic and gave me an insight into what it would be like to get a job in a similar setting.”

Jacqui Crawford, Course Director, Ulster University said:

“Rakia’s sporting success has been a major achievement for her on top of her studies.  During her time at Ulster University Rakia was an enthusiastic and committed student with a focus and determination which can only be of benefit in her future career."
