Vice-Chancellor's Award

Rewarding talent, entrepreneurship and innovation - Read Siofra's story

This fund aims to inspire students and stimulate excellence and innovation by providing support to reward and encourage individual talent, entrepreneurship and creativity.

Siofra Caherty

Multidisciplinary Design student, 2016

Siofra has designed a range of bags under her “Jump the Hedges” brand, which are aimed at the yoga and Pilates market.

With her funding from the Vice-Chancellor’s Award she travelled to the Bali Spirit Festival to showcase her bags.

This was a great event for Siofra where she has made a lot of potential business contacts.

"It was a great experience and I have made connections with yoga studios in the USA, Australia and Europe who are interested in stocking my bags! It is all thanks to the support of the Student Fund."

The Writing Pad, Coleraine

Dr Willa Murphy, Lecturer, School of English and History, recognised the impact an American style Writing Pad could have at Ulster University and set about making it happen. With support from the Vice-Chancellor’s Award it has become a reality.

The Writing Pad welcomes students from any course, where they can gain advice and support in their writing skills from trained student mentors.

Sinead Molloy, a third year English student, who is one of the student mentors said:

"The Writing Pad is a place for all students to air their writing concerns in an open, welcoming and non-judgemental environment. In other words, no anxiety is irrelevant, no concern is trivial and no question is silly! We hope to encourage our fellow students to find their ‘voice’ in writing, to motivate them to take pride in their own ideas and to present these effectively."
