Gina   Bekker

Gina Bekker is a Lecturer in the School of Law and an Associate Member of the Transitional Justice Institute. Gina previously taught law in South Africa (at the University of Pretoria and Vista University) as well as in Egypt (at the American University in Cairo). In addition to teaching, Gina has also worked in the NGO sector as Senior Researcher at the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria, South Africa on the Economic and Social Rights Project and as Senior Legal Officer on the Refugee Legal Aid Project at the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights, Egypt. Gina has acted as consultant to both the South African Human Rights Commission as well as the United Nations Development Project in Egypt. Gina completed her PhD in 2009 at the University of London (Birkbeck College) and holds an LLB (cum laude) from the University of Pretoria, South Africa and an LLM in International Human Rights Law from the University of Notre Dame, U.S.A (magna cum laude) as well as in Fundamental Rights and Constitutional Law Practice from the University of Pretoria. Gina's research interests lie broadly within the field of human rights and more specifically, the African human rights system. Gina is on the editorial board of the African Human Rights Law Journal
