Did U Know? Business Facilities

The Centre for Sustainable Technologies (CST) is a key part of the Built Environment Research Institute, ranked 2nd in the UK (Universities Research Assessment Exercise 2001).

CST is a strong dynamic research group with a wide range of internationally recognised activities in high performance glazing, heat pumps, thermal energy storage, biomass and bioenergy, techno-economic simulation of power generation and solar water heating, solar photovoltaic and passive solar design.

CST has attracted funding in excess of £8.5 million for research, facilities and equipment. This investment has seen the laboratories equipped with extensive computing facilities and data analysis and acquisition equipment which allows full performance appraisal and testing of renewable energy technologies and construction elements. In support of solar energy research activities, an indoor solar simulator is provided. External experiments are carried out on a south-facing roof with easy access and are serviced to accommodate solar thermal and PV environmental testing.

Funding has also been secured to construct a new downdraft gasifier, engine and generator to deliver up to 25kW of electricity and 100kW of heat to the University while undergoing tests of various biomass fuels and fuel preparation techniques. This will be housed with the heat pump development and test facilities, which are being developed to EN14511 test standard to become the only such laboratory for heat pump development in Ireland.
