Just the C-TRIC:
Invest NI’s new Chief Executive, Alastair Hamilton, recently opened the £2million Clinical Translational Research and Innovation Centre (C-TRIC). The Centre, located on the Western Health and Social Care Trust’s Altnagelvin hospital site, will act as a flagship for attracting investment through research and innovation in healthcare to the North West region. The 9,000 sq ft facility is jointly operated and supported by Invest NI, the Western Trust, Derry City Council and the University of Ulster.

Truwood: True Excellence:
Truwood is a complete interior fit-out company based in County Monaghan, which services five star hotels, restaurants, bars and commercial premises worldwide. Since its foundation 25 years ago, Truwood has built an international reputation as one of the best craftsmen-based companies in the business.

Hunter Apparel Solutions Ltd:
The two-year partnership between Ulster and Hunter Apparel Solutions Ltd began in February 2008 and is being steered by David Bell – KTP associate – with academic support from Aiden McCaughey and Dr Tom Lunney, School of Computing and Intelligent Systems.

The Foyle Food Group Ltd (FFG) supplies and manufactures an extensive range of beef and lamb products for major multiples such as Tesco, Birds Eye Foods and Albert Heign.

Schrader Electronics Ltd:
Schrader Electronics Ltd is part of the engineering company Tomkins PLC and is a leading manufacturer of automotive and industrial electronics and the market leader in the design and manufacture of remote tyre pressure monitoring products.

James Mackle Ltd:
Moy-based bramley apple processing company, James Mackle Ltd has successfully completed a two-year Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) with Ulster’s Department of Business, Retail and Financial Services and
the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE).

Problem Solved:
Alta Systems (NI Ltd) Belfast, established in 2000, develops advanced online assessment and problem solving systems for education and training markets in Northern Ireland, England, Scotland and the Isle of Man. The product range includes an online maths learning package for children aged between five and fourteen – ‘Keys For Maths’.

Willis Turns up the Heat:
The Willis Organisation, comprising Willis Heating & Plumbing Co Ltd, Willis Underfloor Heating and Willis Renewable Energy Systems was founded in Belfast in 1887. Since then, the organisation has developed a global reputation for quality, innovation, service and performance within the mechanical services sector.

Gaming Solutions:
TAG Gaming Ltd, a Derry based micro enterprise in its first year of trading, provides online gaming and internet services. The Invest NI innovation voucher project aimed to provide the company with assistance in the development of a market penetration strategy – including a marketing plan, as well as expertise in new service/business development.

Designing Skills Online:
The University of Ulster has launched an online series of courses entitled ‘Visualisation for Architecture’, comprising programmes in AutoCAD 3D Solid Modelling for Architecture; 3D Max for Architecture; and Photoshop for Architecture.

Imagine Create 2009:
Imagine Create 2009 was the first in what is likely to become an annual digital arts and industry festival. It was hosted by the School of Creative Arts at Magee campus, in collaboration with the School of Computing and Intelligent Systems and other regional partners.

Building on Excellence:
Four live construction projects have been identified by Constructing Excellence in Northern Ireland (CEni) as examples of ‘Demonstration Projects’ which promote innovation in construction.

The Family Business:
The University of Ulster has been awarded €4.2 million by the European Regional Development Fund to deliver on two research ventures.

Clearer Vision at Redraven: Cooperation between the EpiCentre at the Magee campus and Redraven, the Belfast-based engineering firm founded in 2004 by former mountain bike champion Jonathan Knight, has resulted in the invention, design and production of a self-cleaning goggle system – Speedview – which will solve the problem of keeping riders’ goggles clean during off-road cycling and racing.

Collaborate, Innovate, Improve:
Eight companies located in the Omagh District Council area have recently benefited from ground breaking research and expertise from the University of Ulster through a Council funded initiative – the Innovation Promoters Programme (IPP).

Turning 'Brain Drain' into 'Brain Gain':
Greenshoots – a Newry-based joint initiative of the University of Ulster and the Southern Regional College recently launched a programme aimed at persuading expatriate graduates to return home and set up knowledge-based businesses.
