Office of the University Secretary
Legal Services
The University is an autonomous institution with capacity to own property, to sue and be sued, and to regulate its own affairs within the wide powers granted to it by its Charter and Statutes. The Office of the University Secretary is responsible for ensuring that the Charter, Statutes, Ordinances and Regulations are adhered to and for introducing modifications to the Ordinances and Regulations when appropriate.
The Office of the University Secretary handles a wide range of correspondence with a legal context in relation to educational, consultancy, student discipline and other services often involving formal links with clients and institutions both at home and overseas. It also ensures that the provisions of the Data Protection Act and the Freedom of Information Act are observed.
The Office of the University Secretary handles all appeals to the Visitor of the University, who has the right at any time to direct an enquiry into the academic and general affairs of the University. However the Department of Physical Resources deals directly with the University Solicitors on property matters, and similarly the Department of Human Resources deals directly with the University Solicitors on matters related to staff and Employment.
