The symposium which takes place on May 4, will provide a forum for university staff to meet and exchange their ideas and experiences of e-Learning is very timely, according to Derek Woods, School of Computing and Intelligence Systems e-Learning co-ordinator. "Undoubtedly, e-Learning is an area of growth and there are a number of innovative programmes running in the university. A key objective of this symposium is to give the developers of the various initiatives an opportunity to share their experiences in some detail with other members of staff. We hope the symposium will also create up opportunities for both constructive collaboration and the reduction of duplication of effort. Admitting that while there was hype with regard to e-Learning opportunities, there was also scepticism among some university staff, said Mr Woods. He added that he hoped the symposium would help dispel some of the myths associated with e-Learning by giving sceptics an opportunity to hear of specific examples of how it has been successfully integrated into the delivery of teaching programmes. "I am by no means an evangelist for e-Learning and accept that it is difficult to replace 'face to face' contact between lecturers and students but the challenge is there for all of us to engage in e-Learning opportunities in the delivery of teaching programmes. Topics to be discussed and contributors include: Library e-Learning, Jim Fitzsimons Sub-Librarian and Mick Carragher Assistant Librarian; e-based educational methods in built environment education, Tim McLernon Faculty Subject Director for Built Environment, School Co-ordinator of Teaching and Learning; The DIESEL project, Dr Jim Harkin, Lecturer School of Computing and Intelligent Systems; The M2AGIC(tm) Wand for Coursework, Dr Peter Nicholl School of Computing and Mathematics; Experiences of Teaching by e-Learning, Mairin Nicell Teaching Fellow, School of Computing and Intelligent Systems; e-Learning and the ADVANCE Project, Philip Houston, Project Manager and , Learning Technologist Faculty of Engineering; Teaching Java via e-Learning, Marie Devlin, Computer Training Officer, School of Computing and Intelligent Systems. The symposium which is one of several UU e-Learning initiatives will also be of interest to anyone who wants to keep up to date with e-learning support tools and techniques to enhance their learning and teaching activities. It gets underway at 11.00 AM in room MG229 at the Magee Campus. Yesterday (Monday) marked the 35th anniversary of the death of 15 people, including children, and the injury of 16 others when a bomb placed in the hallway of the North Queen Street bar by a UVF gang detonated. Robert Campbell, a self-confessed UVF member, was given 16 life sentences for his involvement. He was the driver of the car but the actual bomber was never apprehended. Pat Irvine, the daughter of victim Kathleen Irvine, has again called for Campbell to let victims' families know what happened that day. "I have lived with it for 35 years but the total truth may help alleviate some of its hurt," she said. "Now again I ask you to tell me the whole truth and let me live out my days knowing that my mother's name and the names of all the other victims are cleared. You can do that to help clear your conscience and teach your children the truth. Let us all learn the true story of that fateful night," she said. The attack was one of the deadliest of the Troubles and only the Omagh bomb claimed more lives in a single incident. The Police Ombudsman's Office is carrying out a review of the first police investigation into the attack. Relatives of those who died launched a website – www. themcgurksbarmassacre.com – to coincide with the anniversary. Those who died were: Philomena McGurk (46), Marie McGurk (14), James Cromie (13), John Colton (49), Thomas McLaughlin (55), (52), James Smyth (58), Francis Bradley (61), Thomas Kane (49), Kathleen Irvine (53), Philip Garry (75), Edward Kane (29), Edward Keenan (69), Sarah Keenan (58) and Robert Spotswood (38). Speaking at an event on Monday to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the UVF bomb attack on the New Lodge bar in which 15 people died, Robert McClenaghan said any renewed investigation must be “independent from the British”. The PSNI's Historical Enquiries Team (HET) is currently re-examining the murders. However, relatives of those murdered have little faith in the HET investigation as some of its staff are former members of RUC. The RUC has been accused of covering up the role of those involved in the slaughter. “How can the HET be acceptable to the people of the New Lodge when their predecessors in the RUC were complicit in the McGurk's massacre and the subsequent cover-up,” asked Mr McClenaghan. “How could anyone think that the HET can meet the families’ demands for independence in dealing with state and state-sponsored killings? “Any investigation into unsolved killings must be independent from the British who are a key protagonist to the conflict.” Sinn Féin MLA Kathy Stanton, a New Lodge native, said the anniversary of McGurk's was a time for memories and quiet reflection. She said: “The McGurk's atrocity, the killing of Peter McBride and the New Lodge Six killings, like so many other deaths remain open wounds in this community. “All these families’ campaigns must be assisted in their efforts to place guilt on those who were behind this attack. Sinn Féin is firmly behind families as they push for truth and justice.” Those murdered in the McGurk's bombing were Philomena McGurk, Marie McGurk, James Cromie, John Colton, Thomas McLaughlin, , James Smyth, Francis Bradley, Thomas Kane, Kathleen Irvine, Philip Garry, Edward Kane, Edward Keenan, Sarah Keenan and Robert Spotswood. http://www.irelandclick.com/home.tvt?_ticket=9NTHLXD4...lyIreland/North%20Belfast%20News/News&id=24984&psv=12 (1 of 2)11/12/2006 11:27:18 Irelandclick.com Lineage Advertisments Death Notices -- Aisling Bursary Aisling Awards -- Media Pack About Us Contact Us Blogs Download this week's Business and Recruitment supplement Loyalist Robert Campbell was convicted in 1977 of blowing up McGurk's. Parishioners coming from Mass at St Patrick's Church on Donegall Street paid little attention to the men in the car parked close to McGurk's Bar on North Queen Street. Some people stopped to buy a newspaper from a young boy standing on the pavement outside McGurk's Bar before making their way home. The eight-year-old became curious about the waiting car, which had a small Union flag sticker on the back windscreen. As he looked on a man got out of the vehicle and carried a large box over to the door of the bar. The boy saw the man light something in the box and then run to the car, which sped off in the direction of loyalist York Street. The boy ran over to the door where he saw sparks coming from the box. In panic he ran shouting to a man nearby that there was a bomb in the doorway. Seconds later the pair were lifted off their feet by the force of the blast. Within seconds McGurk's Bar lay in ruins, torn apart by 40 pounds of explosive. Fifteen people were dead and a further 16 injured. Those killed included schoolchildren and pensioners. All of the customers were from North Queen Street and were regulars at McGurk's – one of the most respected families in the area. The British army initially claimed that the explosion had been an IRA own goal and that the bomb was being made in the bar when This article appears thanks to the Irish News. It was a lie that for many years caused huge pain to the families of those murdered. Catholic primate Cardinal Conway described it as "a new and vicious twist in this terrible spiral of violence and counter violence". The McGurk family had lived in the two storeys above the bar. It was an old building which, when the bomb went off, crumpled like a deck of cards. In 1996 Patrick McGurk's son John, who was 10 years of age at the time, vividly recalled the explosion that killed his mother and sister. "It was sometime between 8pm and 8.30pm and I was in the sitting room of our house which would have been the room above the bar. "If you had put your ear to the floor you could hear the noise from the bar. "It really wasn't a case of lights going off – it was like something out of a really bad horror film. "I remember tumbling in air and space amid this massive rush of wind and noise. "It must have been just a matter of seconds. "I couldn't remember anything else because I must have been unconscious for a while but I don't know how long it was." Despite lying trapped beneath a wall of concrete John escaped with just a minor injury. "It was miraculous for me because a person – Jimmy – who was just a few feet away from me was killed. "I woke up and I really didn't know what had happened. "There was then the realisation that the building had collapsed and I was stuck. "I wasn't physically injured. The only injury I had was an injured finger but that was it." He prayed. Then out of the silence he heard voices and people ploughing through the mass of rubble. He began shouting and soon after there was a voice above him, moving debris. "It's the tragedy of Northern Ireland that a few years later the man who saved me, a man called O'Hanlon, was picked up by a loyalist murder gang at Carlisle Circus coming back from a chip shop and murdered," John said. Reliving the nightmare of losing a mother and sister, he said: "The worst thing about it was that I'm nearly sure that I heard my sister crying for help because there wouldn't have been any other young female stuck there. "It's possible that it was my imagination. It's possible that she was already dead but that's what I remember." It had been thought that Philomena and Maria McGurk hadn't been in the house at the time. They usually went to the Saturday vigil Mass in St Patrick's. But that night they returned just before the bomb exploded. However, for John McGurk there was comfort in having his father, Patrick, with him on the ambulance journey to Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital, where doctors examined him and gave him the all-clear. It wasn't until the following day that he was told about the deaths of his mother and sister. Expressing admiration for his father's reaction to the bombing and its aftermath, John said: "I remember he went on the television. I know that people can be critical of people going on TV and saying they forgive the people who carried out an atrocity.
