Coleraine campus buildings

Our Coleraine and Magee campuses play a vital role in the economic, social and cultural development of the region.

To date we have made significant investment in state-of-the-art teaching, research and support facilities. Our future plans will build on this investment and further develop vibrant, dynamic and thriving campuses.

Our North West Development website will be updated frequently and the latest information concerning progress will be made here. If you have a specific enquiry concerning our North West Development plans please email northwestdevelopment@ulster.ac.uk as we'd like to hear from you.

Our campus development plans for Coleraine are aimed at consolidating student numbers at approximately 5,500 students.

Over the past ten years we have invested in excess of £50m in various infrastructure developments at Coleraine in order to consolidate and sustain student numbers at these levels.

Our most recent infrastructure developments at Coleraine include:

  • Investment in state-of-the-art Pharmacy Facilities in the Saad Building;
  • New Centre for Coastal and Marine Research;
  • New Centre for Molecular Biosciences;
  • New Learning Resource Centre;
  • Planned refurbishment of the School of Computing and Information Engineering;
  • Refurbishment of Nursing Education Facilities;
  • Refurbishment of Psychology Laboratories;
  • Refurbishment of Riverside Theatre seating;
  • Refurbishment of the Diamond;
  • Refurbishment of Ulster Business School Provision;
  • Replacement of the electrical infrastructure of the campus.

As a university with a national and international reputation for excellence, innovation and regional engagement we are also exploring the possibility of working with external partners to develop and establish a business park on the site.

Investment in the North West: Magee

Our development plans for Magee are based upon on expansion and developing, delivering and sustaining high-quality, regionally relevant provision with an emphasis on professional education for professional life.

Our ambition of estate expansion at Magee will build on existing teaching and research strengths in:

  • Arts and social sciences (including History, Celtic Studies, Irish Cultural Heritages, Social Policy and Social Work)
  • Computing and Electronics (Intelligent Systems)
  • Creative Technologies and the Performing Arts (the Creative Industries)
  • International Business and Financial Services (including e-business)
  • Law and Professional Legal Education and Training
  • Nursing and Psychology

We will also extend activity into sustainable technologies to complement existing activity at our Jordanstown campus.

Approximately half of our proposed expansion will be concentrated at the full-time undergraduate level and half at the postgraduate and part-time level.

In order to receive approval from government to increase our full-time undergraduate numbers our planned areas for expansion focus on the government's priority areas as they relate to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and areas identified in economic development strategies. Provost and Dean of Academic Development, Professor Deirdre Heenan, has been working in partnership with Deans of Faculty and Pro-Vice-Chancellors to spearhead these developments since 2009.

In terms of student numbers we anticipate that this phase of Magee's development will see student numbers grow from over 4,000 currently to 5,500 - 6,000 in the next five to six years.
