Derry and Raphoe Diocesan Library
A guest lecture, hosted by Archives and organised by the Department of
Public Affairs, was held on the Magee Campus on 18 February to mark the
signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the University and the
Church of Ireland Diocese of Derry and Raphoe to formalise the
arrangements for the care of the Diocesan Library. This historic
collection is now housed in the Rare Books Room in the Magee LRC, where it
will be available to researchers from the University and the wider
research community. A large attendance heard an interesting joint lecture
by Caroline Bendix and Dr Nicholas Pickwoad, two renowned conservators who
surveyed the collection for the University, after which the Vice
Chancellor and Bishop Ken Good signed the Memorandum. The audience
included many Diocesan clergy as well as many of the volunteers from
across Information Services who cleaned, individually packed and moved the
7,000 books in two weeks last summer.
Archivist’s Report
The Report of the University Archivist and Rare Books Curator for the
Period Ending 31st July 2003 has recently been presented to Senate and
Council. This document outlines the work of the Archives in the period
since the service was established, and it is intended that it will become
an annual publication. An appendix lists items received to date. Copies
are available in each of the campus libraries, and the document can also
be viewed on the Archives Web site at:
