4i Project: Linking Digital Libraries with VLEs

Now is a good time to provide an update on progress as the 4i Project, funded by JISC for the academic year 2002/3, is halfway through its short lifecycle.

The Library Service Point (LSP) is a web service designed to use person and module information passed between VLE and Library systems to dynamically generate contextual links to relevant library resources and services, based who the student is and what they are currently studying. All live modules in WebCT now incorporate links to the LSP which includes, for example, a link to the appropriate module reading list. Athens Devolved Authentication has also been implemented to facilitate pre-authentication to selected resources when a student logs into WebCT. This effectively eliminates the need for distance learners to enter an Athens username and password to gain access to a range of required resources. These developments result in the realisation of one of the key project objectives; seamless integration of the course content (in WebCT), resource lists (in TalisList) and external Athens-protected resources (e.g. electronic journals).

In addition to achieving VLE/Library system integration the project team have, with cooperation from academics, been able to double the number of module resources lists available online. Development work is also underway towards the production of a web-based information skills unit and improved methods of providing appropriate support for on and off-campus students. Project outcomes benefit all students, especially those studying at a distance, by easing the location of, access to and use of required Library resources and services.
