Information Services Newsletter Several significant service enhancements have been undertaken with others in the pipeline. IT User Services has recently installed over 150 new desktop computer systems as part of its ongoing development of the corporate IT laboratory service. We are also about to introduce a small cluster of modern video-editing facilities, at Jordanstown, and we will shortly deliver the first staff training event associated with the effective use of an extensively modernised video-conferencing service. Needless to say, these developments do require significant effort to establish. Whilst we endeavour to keep service disruptions to a minimum, technology change can introduce unanticipated effects. Disruptions to our corporate IT laboratory service, during semester II, were addressed through a major project undertaken in the inter-semester break. Over 220 person days were devoted to enhancements to networks, to desktop operating systems and to hardware. Users should now experience significant overall performance improvements and disruptions to service should also decline dramatically. Noel Wilson |
