New Assistive Technology Provision
within the University

Information Services, in collaboration with the Disability Office, has installed new assistive software on the student CDE, as well as on six standalone systems accessible in Libraries and LRCs.

The following software is available on all IT laboratory computers for students to use:

• Read & Write V7 Standard (for Dyslexia and reading difficulties)
• ZoomText V8 Magnifier
• Quickscan self test for dyslexia
• MindGenius - mind mapping software
• KAZ typing tutor
• IBM ViaVoice (voice recognition software– available for training purposes only)

In each library or LRC a computer with scanner has been provided with more advanced assistive hardware and software for individual users. Software available includes:

• Read & Write V7 Gold (for Dyslexia and reading difficulties -
   with ability to scan, and read aloud printed text)
• Kurzweil 3000 Scan & Read – similar to above
• ZoomText V8 Magnifier and Screen Reader
• QuickScan self test for dyslexia
• MindGenius mind mapping software
• KAZ typing tutor
• Jaws for Windows screen reader

Assistive Technology Training

Disability Services has employed Patrick McGlone, an IT placement student, to develop and deliver assistive technology training to students with disabilities and make the training materials available online for academic and support staff who wish to become familiar with the operation of this software.
