Death of Robert Cordner

We are sad to report the death of Robert (Bob) Cordner, Computer Manager of the then Ulster College, the Northern Ireland Polytechnic since the creation of the post in 1971, and Director of Computer Services of the University of Ulster from its opening in 1984 until his retirement in September 1989.

Following a short period in teaching, Bob joined Shorts in the late 1950s to work in a newly established mathematics section where he became associated with some of the very early scientific applications of digital computers within Northern Ireland. He then joined the Ulster College as its first, and only, Computer Manager. Bob became the  Director of Computer Services following the merger of the then new University of Ulster and the Polytechnic, where
he had the task of merging two independent staff teams and of overseeing the integration of administrative and academic IT systems.

Bob was married to Maureen and had a family of two sons, Terence and Michael. Our condolences are extended to his wife and family and wider family circle.
