Information Services Newsletter Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is software that automatically assigns IP addresses to network devices. Last year, Information Services piloted DHCP in several areas. This year we will expand the service into faculty areas, thus removing the need to use fixed IP addresses. This will allow greater flexibility in relocation of PCs between blocks and simplify installation of new PCs. Servers and network printers will still require the use of fixed IP addresses. An upgrade programme has to be finalised, but faculty staff will be consulted as areas are migrated to DHCP. Harry Young |
