What is SkyDrive?

SkyDrive is a file storage environment hosted by Microsoft on behalf of University of Ulster students. There is 25 Gb of free online space and SkyDrive works well on any Windows or Macintosh computer with Firefox 1.5 or higher, or Internet Explorer 6 or higher. Not only can you use the space yourself, but you can grant other Skydrive users access to specific files - a great tool for those collaborative assignments and projects!

How Do I Transfer My Files?

When you begin, there will be four personal folders already created for you. You can use one of these to get you started.

Uploading a Document

Select one of these folders, say Documents. When you open it, there will be a message to say that the folder is empty. Look for the green cross to add files.

  The Add Files Browser appears.

Now search for the files that you wish to upload. There is a 50Mb limit to each file.

When you are ready to transfer the files, press the Upload button in the bottom, right-hand corner.
Downloading a document Go to the folder where the document is stored. Click on it to select it. A snapshot view of the file will appear, with the filename just above it.
  Press the Download button
  The File Download Prompt appears.
Choose Save and select a local folder in which to place the file.

How Do I Create or Delete a Folder?

Creating a new folder In the top level of the Folders area, press the New Folder button. The New Folder prompt will appear.

Give your folder a name and leave the Access option at 'Just Me'.
You will be prompted to 'Add files'. If you do not wish to do this at this stage, simply select Cancel (bottom right).
Deleting a folder Select the folder you wish to delete and press the Folder Options button.

Press the Delete button.
Remember - any files within this folder will also be deleted!

How do I share my files?

Click on the link to 'Create a folder to share with friends'. Type in the name you wish to call the folder and select 'People I choose...'.
Type the email address(es) of anyone you wish to have access to the folder and click the Add button.
The email addresses of people you add will be displayed onscreen and you can select or unselect individuals (as desired).
Click the 'Create folder' button to complete the process.

Upload any files you wish to share and place them in the shared folder.

Note:  Shared folder access permissions for individual persons can be set to Reader (can view but not change files) or Editor (can view, add, change or delete files).

Is my data secure?

Your personal folders are password-protected with your Live@edu ID, so only you have access.
When you create a shared folder, the friends you're sharing with need to sign in with their own Live@edu (or Windows Live) ID and password.
Just like at your online bank, all file transfers are protected using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL).
Files on SkyDrive are not automatically backed up, so if you delete anything, it can't be restored. If you have important files, you should arrange to keep your own backup copies.

Can I edit documents when online?

It is possible to edit documents online (using the Open option when downloading a document - see above). We would suggest, however, that it is best practice to save the document to a local drive, edit it, and then upload the new version to SkyDrive.
