Use of
Laptops in Wireless Zones and Open Access Centres

Prerequisites - Software and Hardware
Laptop Security and Integrity
It is the
responsibility of the user to implement a number of essential security
features before connecting their laptop to the University network.
Software Requirements

Network settings configured to use DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration
Protocol). DHCP automatically assigns valid IP addresses to
stations on the network. For advice on how to configure the network
client for DHCP, please refer to
Appendix
1

An up-to-date Web browser – e.g. Internet Explorer,
Firefox or Safari.
Additional Software Requirements

All critical Operating System patches (e.g. Windows Updates) must be
applied and active on the laptop

Active, up-to-date Anti-Virus software must be running on the
laptop.

An active personal firewall must be deployed on the Laptop to
counter common “attacks”
Hardware Requirements
All laptops require specific hardware to connect to the University’s
network.
- Via
Wireless - An 802.11b or 802.11g (commonly known as Wi-Fi)
compatible wireless Ethernet adapter. It is the user’s
responsibility to ensure that this is installed and configured
correctly.
