Use of Laptops in Wireless Zones and Open Access Centres
Laptop Prerequisites - Software and Hardware

Laptop Security and Integrity

It is the responsibility of the user to implement a number of essential security features before connecting their laptop to the University network.

Software Requirements

  • Network settings configured to use DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol).  DHCP automatically assigns valid IP addresses to stations on the network.  For advice on how to configure the network client for DHCP, please refer to Appendix 1  - DHCP Configuration Notes
  • An up-to-date Web browser – e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox or Safari.

Additional Software Requirements

  • All critical Operating System patches (e.g. Windows Updates) must be applied and active on the laptop
  • Active, up-to-date Anti-Virus software must be running on the laptop.
  • An active personal firewall must be deployed on the Laptop to counter common “attacks”

Hardware Requirements

All laptops require specific hardware to connect to the University’s network.

  • Via Wireless  - An 802.11b or 802.11g (commonly known as Wi-Fi) compatible wireless Ethernet adapter. It is the user’s responsibility to ensure that this is installed and configured correctly.
