Configuration Difficulties FAQ

Use of Laptops in Wireless Zones and Open Access Centres

No Wireless Signal Detected or Wireless Connection Unavailable

When you try to connect to the wireless network using the instructions in the relevant Wireless Setup guide found at:

http://www.ulster.ac.uk/isd/itus/laptops/

you will normally see the range of available wireless networks within your area. Should this not happen, the following screen will be presented.

Before proceeding with any configuration changes, you should check that:

You are in a Wireless Zone
You may not be within range of the nearest access point. The coverage of an access point may be blocked by walls etc (creating a “blind spot”) or there may be no access points in the area. Look out for the University wireless access point signs – “Wi-Fi Zone”. Click here for the current list of wireless access points on campus.

Your wireless card is enabled

The wireless card may be turned off or disabled. Most laptops have a small external switch to turn the internal wireless card on. These small switches are usually situated to the front or side of the case but can be hard to find. Some notebooks use the combination of the Fn + F2 or F5 on the keyboard  – please refer to your manufacturer's guide for details.
