Information Services
FrontBridge - Spam Filtering

Introducing FrontBridge

Information Services operates a spam filtering service. Known as FrontBridge Spam Filter* and provided by Microsoft, the service is the University's primary message filtering service for external email.

* rebranded as Microsoft Forefront (Online Security for Exchange)

How Frontbridge Works
All incoming University messages, from an external source and with a recognised University of Ulster address, is re-directed to the Frontbridge filter service, where they are tested for viruses (infected messages are removed). Potential spam emails are identified and placed in a
quarantine spam digest. Once processed, genuine emails are forwarded to the University's own mail server for internal distribution.

Quarantine Spam Digest
This list of identified spam messages is sent to the recipients weekly. The digest will be similar to the screenshot below.

  • To recover an email message to your Inbox, click the Move to Inbox link.
  • If a message has been incorrectly identified as Spam, click the Not Junk link.  When you click the Not Junk link, the message will be recovered to your Inbox, and a copy will be submitted to the FrontBridge Spam Team for analysis.
  • To read a Spam message, click on the Subject and you will be directed to the Spam Quarantine login (see below).  After logging in, the message you clicked on will be displayed.
  • Messages are automatically deleted from Spam Quarantine after 15 days.

Frontbridge Online Service

Frontbridge allows users to log into a website to view (and release) quarantined messages. The address for the website is:

https://quarantine.messaging.microsoft.com/ Note: the https is important!

University of Ulster staff or students must login using:

a usercode your University of Ulster email address
a password your own password

Using the System for the First Time

First-time users require an initial password. To obtain this,

  1. select the First Time option
  2. type in your University of Ulster email address
  3. press the Submit button

The initial password will be sent to your University email account.

The first time you log into the system, you will be prompted to change your password.

What happens if I forget my password?

There is a 'Forgot Password?' option on the main login screen. You will be prompted to enter your email address. When you have done this and pressed the 'Submit' button, a new (and temporary) password is emailed to you.  You can then use this to access the system but you must change your password before proceeding.

Passwords for Generic University Email Accounts

Some departments have generic email accounts in which the incoming mail is forwarded to several individuals. If one person changes the password for this account, they may lock out other members of the team from the Frontbridge website.

It is the responsibility of the generic account holders to co-ordinate password access to the Frontbridge website.

To View a Message

The messages are displayed in a similar manner to those in the Quarantine Digest.

To view a message, click once on the message Subject. The message will be displayed within the same window.

To return to the digest list, select the Close option from the menu.

To Release a Message

  • A message can be released in either list mode or message mode. In both cases, click the Move to Inbox link.
  • If a message has been incorrectly identified as Spam, click the Not Junk link.  When you click the Not Junk link, the message will be recovered to your Inbox, and a copy will be submitted to the FrontBridge Spam Team for analysis.
